Politics – DMK and CPI Finalise Seat-Sharing Deal After Tough Talks
Politics – The ruling DMK has concluded a seat-sharing arrangement with the Communist Party of India (CPI), bringing an end to several days of negotiations marked by differing expectations on both sides.

The agreement, finalised on Wednesday, allocates five Assembly constituencies to the CPI. This is one seat fewer than what the party contested during the 2021 Assembly elections as part of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance.
Agreement Signed in Presence of Senior Leaders
The formal signing took place at the DMK headquarters, where Chief Minister and DMK president M.K. Stalin and CPI State secretary M. Veerapandiyan put their signatures on the pact. Senior leaders from both parties were present, signalling a coordinated effort to maintain unity within the alliance ahead of the elections.
The development is seen as an important step in consolidating the alliance structure, especially at a time when multiple parties are seeking space within the coalition.
Negotiations Marked by Wide Differences
Discussions between the two parties were not straightforward. The CPI initially entered negotiations with a demand for a double-digit number of seats, reflecting its ambition to expand its presence in the Assembly.
On the other hand, the DMK began talks from a much lower starting point, reportedly offering only four constituencies. This gap in expectations led to several rounds of deliberations before both sides moved closer to a compromise.
Pressure from Expanding Alliance
Sources indicated that the DMK’s position was influenced by the inclusion of new partners in its alliance. Parties such as the DMDK and MNM have recently joined the coalition, increasing the complexity of seat distribution.
With more stakeholders involved, the ruling party had to carefully balance competing demands while ensuring that its core electoral strategy remained intact. This limited the number of seats it could offer to existing allies like the CPI.
Final Phase of Talks Leads to Compromise
In the final stage of negotiations, both sides maintained firm positions. The CPI sought one additional seat compared to its 2021 tally, while the DMK proposed a reduction of one seat from that figure.
After extended discussions, the CPI agreed on Tuesday night to accept five seats. The decision was taken following internal consultations, including a meeting of state-level functionaries held earlier in the week to evaluate the DMK’s proposal.
Strategic Importance of the Alliance
Despite the reduction in seats, the CPI’s decision to remain within the alliance reflects the broader strategic importance of unity among like-minded parties. Political observers note that maintaining a cohesive front could play a crucial role in the upcoming Assembly elections.
For the DMK, finalising agreements with its allies is a key step in preparing for the electoral battle. Ensuring that negotiations conclude without major disputes helps project stability and coordination within the alliance.
Focus Shifts to Campaign Preparations
With the seat-sharing issue now resolved, both parties are expected to shift their attention toward candidate selection and campaign planning. The coming weeks will likely see increased political activity as parties gear up to reach voters across constituencies.
The agreement also sets the stage for similar arrangements with other alliance partners, as the DMK works to finalise its broader electoral strategy
