Politics – The decision by the Assam government to remove the name of former President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed from Barpeta Medical College has sparked a political debate, with senior Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi strongly criticising the move and urging the state administration to reconsider the change.
The issue came into focus after Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi publicly expressed his objections to the government’s decision. According to Gogoi, removing the name of a prominent national leader and freedom fighter from an important public institution undermines the recognition of his historical contribution to the country.
Congress Raises Concerns Over Decision
Gaurav Gogoi described the decision as deeply disappointing and said it reflects a lack of respect for one of Assam’s most prominent public figures. Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, who served as the fifth President of India, remains an important personality in the state’s history and national politics.
Gogoi emphasised that Ahmed was the first individual from Assam to hold the office of President of India. He added that institutions named after historical figures are meant to preserve their legacy and remind future generations of their service to the nation.
According to the Congress leader, removing Ahmed’s name from Barpeta Medical College raises questions about the reasoning behind the government’s move. He said the college had been named in honour of a respected Assamese figure who contributed significantly to India’s political history.
Questions Over Political Intent
During his remarks, Gogoi also questioned whether the renaming decision could be linked to broader political motives. He suggested that such actions may risk deepening divisions within society if historical figures are removed from public recognition.

The Congress leader described Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed as both a respected statesman and a freedom fighter who played an important role during India’s struggle for independence as well as in the country’s democratic journey after independence.
Appeal to Preserve Historical Legacy
Gogoi urged the Assam government to review the decision and maintain the existing name of the medical college. According to him, institutions named after historic personalities serve as a tribute to their achievements and help maintain the collective memory of a region’s contributions to the nation.
He said respecting Assam’s history and acknowledging the achievements of its notable personalities should be a shared responsibility. Maintaining Ahmed’s name at the medical college, he argued, would reflect respect for both the state’s heritage and the legacy of a former President.
Gogoi further added that Ahmed’s contributions to public life continue to hold significance in India’s democratic history. As such, he believes the association of his name with the medical college should remain intact.
Government Defends the Renaming
Responding to the criticism, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the government had taken the decision deliberately and stands by it. He said the administration was fully aware of the implications of the change and had decided to proceed after careful consideration.
Sarma also said that he personally accepts responsibility for the decision taken by the state government. According to him, feedback from residents in Barpeta has been largely positive regarding the renaming move.
The Chief Minister indicated that local sentiment played a role in the government’s approach, suggesting that many people in the area supported the change. However, the controversy has continued to attract political attention as opposition leaders demand further explanation.
