Crime – Tripura MLA Raises Alarm After Brutal Gurugram Assault

Crime –  A shocking case involving the alleged assault of a 19-year-old woman from Tripura in Gurugram has sparked strong political reactions, with Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman saying the incident reflects a disturbing nationwide pattern of crimes against women.

MLA Says Incident Reflects Wider Safety Crisis

Addressing reporters in Agartala on Monday, Barman said the alleged attack should not be dismissed as an isolated episode. According to him, the case mirrors a broader climate of insecurity faced by women across India.

He argued that rising instances of violence indicate a troubling mindset and questioned whether adequate preventive steps are being taken. “It would be misleading to treat this as a one-off case,” he said, adding that the safety of women remains a pressing concern.

Barman also alleged that authorities have failed to respond with the urgency such incidents demand. He claimed that recurring cases of violence show gaps in both policy implementation and enforcement.

Criticism Over Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Spending

The Congress legislator further criticised the Union government’s flagship initiative, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, which was launched to promote the protection and education of girls. Barman alleged that a significant portion of the scheme’s budget had been allocated to promotional campaigns rather than on-ground safety measures.

He described the situation as unfortunate, arguing that greater investment should be directed toward strengthening support systems, law enforcement capacity, and rehabilitation services for victims.

The government has previously maintained that the programme aims to address gender-based discrimination and improve welfare measures for girls. However, opposition leaders have periodically questioned its fund utilisation.

Details of the Alleged Assault

The MLA’s remarks came in response to the case of a young woman from Tripura who was allegedly assaulted by her live-in partner in Gurugram earlier this month.

According to information recorded in the First Information Report (FIR), the alleged incident took place on February 16. The complaint states that the accused physically attacked the woman, striking her with a steel bottle and repeatedly hitting her head against walls and furniture. The FIR further mentions that she was assaulted with an earthen pot and that sanitiser was allegedly poured on her before an attempt was made to set parts of her body on fire.

The report also alleges that the accused used a knife to injure her legs and issued threats intended to intimidate her. The woman stated in her complaint that explicit videos were recorded without her consent.

Emergency Call and Police Response

According to the FIR, the victim was able to contact her mother on the night of February 18 using the accused’s phone. She reportedly explained the situation in Bengali, a language the accused did not understand.

After receiving the call, the woman’s mother dialed the emergency helpline 112. Police personnel subsequently reached the apartment in Gurugram and shifted the victim to a government hospital for medical treatment.

Authorities have registered a case under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 115, 118(1), 118(2), 127(2), 69, and 351(2). An investigation is currently underway.

Call for Accountability and Stronger Safeguards

Barman called for strict legal action against the accused and urged authorities to ensure that justice is delivered without delay. He also emphasised the need for systemic reforms to prevent similar cases in the future.

The incident has once again brought attention to the issue of women safety and the effectiveness of existing legal safeguards. As the investigation proceeds, political leaders and civil society groups are closely watching how the case unfolds.
