Politics – TMC Legislator Accused of Assaulting Students in Nadia

Politics –  A fresh controversy has emerged in West Bengal after a legislator from the ruling party was accused of physically assaulting a group of students in Nadia district on Sunday night. The incident has sparked protests at the local level and added to mounting political pressure following another arrest involving a party functionary earlier the same day.

Allegations Against Karimpur MLA

According to local accounts, Bimalendu Singharoy, a Member of the Legislative Assembly representing the Karimpur constituency and affiliated with the Trinamool Congress, was involved in an altercation with students in Baliadanga village under Murutia police station limits. The episode reportedly unfolded late Sunday evening as several students were cycling back home after attending private tuition classes.

Witnesses claimed that the legislator’s vehicle approached the narrow road from behind and sounded its horn repeatedly. When the students allegedly failed to immediately clear the way, tempers reportedly flared. It is alleged that Singharoy stepped out of his vehicle and confronted the students, and that the confrontation soon turned physical.

No official statement from the MLA had been issued at the time of reporting, and it remains unclear whether a formal complaint has been lodged with the police.

Protest Outside Legislator’s Residence

News of the alleged assault spread quickly in the area, prompting students and local residents to gather outside the MLA’s residence later that night. Demonstrators demanded that he come out and publicly apologise for the incident.

Eyewitnesses said the protest remained largely peaceful, though tensions were high. Residents expressed concern about what they described as inappropriate conduct by a public representative. Some parents of the students were also present, seeking clarification over what had occurred.

Local police were deployed to monitor the situation and prevent any escalation. Officials have not confirmed whether an investigation has been initiated.

Separate Arrest Adds to Political Strain

The development comes within hours of another controversy involving the ruling party. Earlier on Sunday, a councillor of the North Barrackpore Municipality in North 24 Parganas district was arrested in connection with the alleged lynching of an elderly man.

Authorities confirmed that the councillor was taken into custody following accusations of involvement in the incident. Details surrounding the case are still under investigation, and police have not disclosed further specifics.

The proximity of the two incidents has drawn attention across the state, with opposition parties questioning the conduct of certain local leaders. However, senior Trinamool Congress leaders have not yet issued a comprehensive response addressing both matters.

Political Reactions and Public Concerns

While political exchanges intensified on social media, residents in Nadia expressed a more immediate concern about safety and accountability. Community members said the alleged altercation with students has raised questions about road discipline and the responsibilities of elected representatives.

Legal experts note that any allegations of physical assault would require formal complaints and due process before conclusions can be drawn. Police sources indicated that they are reviewing available information.

The situation continues to evolve as authorities assess the facts surrounding both incidents. With public attention focused on law and order issues, the developments may have broader political implications in the coming days.
