Uttarakhand News – Kotdwar Tensions Ease as Police Assure Peace After Attack Incident
Uttarakhand News – A tense situation that emerged in Uttarakhand’s Kotdwar town over the past week appears to be stabilising, with police authorities assuring residents that peace has been restored and preventive measures are firmly in place. The development follows an alleged attack on a local gym trainer who had spoken in support of a shop owner whose business was earlier targeted over its name.

Police Assurances After Alleged Assault
Deepak Kumar, a gym trainer based in Kotdwar, said police officials reached out to him soon after the alleged assault and acknowledged that the incident should not have taken place. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Kumar stated that he was called to the police station, where officers listened to his account and assured him that steps had been taken to prevent any recurrence.
According to Kumar, police officials conveyed that maintaining public order was a priority and that such incidents would not be allowed to happen again. He also appealed to supporters and well-wishers to remain calm and avoid gathering around him at this stage. Emphasising restraint, he said there would be time for meetings later, but for now, people should stay where they are and allow the situation to settle.
Shop Owner Calls for Calm Amid Social Media Claims
Vakil Ahmad, the owner of the clothing store at the centre of the controversy, also urged residents to ignore rumours circulating online and to maintain calm. Addressing concerns about the situation in Kotdwar, Ahmad said the town has a long-standing reputation for peace and harmony, which he believes remains intact.
He described claims spreading on social media as misleading and said they did not reflect the ground reality. Ahmad expressed satisfaction with how the police administration handled the matter, noting that markets across the town were open and daily business activities were continuing without disruption. He reiterated that there was no cause for panic and appealed to citizens not to be influenced by unverified online posts.
How the Dispute Began
The unrest traces back to January 26, when a disagreement reportedly arose after a group objected to the name of Ahmad’s shop and allegedly asked for it to be changed. Police officials said the situation escalated when Deepak Kumar confronted members of the group, leading to heightened tensions in the area.
Over the following days, the dispute sparked protests, with demonstrations reported on January 31. Authorities moved in to prevent the situation from worsening, deploying additional personnel and monitoring key areas of the town.
Security Measures and Monitoring on the Ground
Kotdwar Assistant Superintendent of Police Chandra Mohan Singh said the situation is currently under control and that law enforcement agencies are maintaining a visible presence on the streets. He confirmed that foot patrols and flag marches are being conducted regularly to reassure residents and deter any attempts to disturb public order.
Singh also issued a warning against sensationalising the issue on social media platforms. He said police teams are closely monitoring online activity and will take action against anyone found spreading misinformation or inflammatory content that could disrupt communal harmony.
Legal Action and Official Appeal
Pauri Garhwal Senior Superintendent of Police Sarvesh Panwar confirmed that first information reports have been registered based on complaints received from both sides involved in the dispute. He said video footage and other evidence are being examined as part of the investigation.
Panwar appealed to the public to cooperate with the administration and avoid actions that could disturb peace in the region. He assured residents that strict legal action would be taken against individuals found guilty, regardless of their affiliation. According to him, maintaining harmony and ensuring accountability under the law remain the administration’s top priorities.
As authorities continue to monitor the situation, police officials and community members alike are calling for calm, stressing that dialogue and lawful processes are the only way forward for preserving Kotdwar’s social stability.
