Sandeshkhali – BJP Returns to High Court Alleging False Cases Against Workers
Sandeshkhali – The Sandeshkhali matter has once again reached the Calcutta High Court, with the Bharatiya Janata Party moving a fresh petition that questions the conduct of the police and alleges targeted legal action against its members in North 24 Parganas district.

BJP Raises Fresh Concerns Over Police Action
In its latest plea, the BJP has claimed that several of its workers and supporters in Sandeshkhali are being falsely named in criminal cases. The party has argued before the court that First Information Reports have been registered against individuals without sufficient grounds, leading to what it describes as continued harassment. Among those named in the petition is BJP leader Gangadhar Koyal, along with other party workers active in the region.
The petition was formally admitted by the court on Wednesday, paving the way for a detailed hearing expected to take place on Thursday. The party has sought judicial intervention, stating that the situation on the ground has worsened despite earlier assurances.
Allegations of Multiple FIRs and Serious Charges
According to the BJP, the police have lodged several cases involving cognizable offences against its workers. The party has further alleged that in some instances, arms-related charges have also been included, which it claims are baseless. The petition argues that such actions are not only damaging reputations but are also creating an atmosphere of fear among party supporters.
The BJP has maintained that these cases are part of a broader pattern aimed at discouraging political activity in Sandeshkhali. It has urged the court to examine whether due process is being followed while initiating legal action.
Earlier Assurances Recalled in Court
This is not the first time the issue has come up before the Calcutta High Court. Earlier, when FIRs against BJP workers were challenged, the state government had provided a verbal assurance through its Advocate General that no coercive or harsh steps would be taken against those named in the cases.
However, the BJP has now told the court that these assurances have not translated into relief on the ground. The party has alleged that summonses and notices are still being issued regularly, forcing workers to appear before authorities and causing what it describes as unnecessary distress.
Claims of Threats and Urgent Hearing Request
In its submission, the BJP has also alleged that some of its members are being threatened with arrest. The party stated that such threats persist despite earlier court observations intended to offer protection. Citing the urgency of the matter, the BJP approached the office of the Chief Justice and requested an expedited hearing.
An application seeking urgent listing of the case was placed before Chief Justice Sujoy Paul, highlighting the party’s concern that delays could result in irreversible harm to those involved.
Background of Related Sandeshkhali Cases
The Sandeshkhali issue has seen several legal developments in recent months. During the initial phase of the controversy, a case was registered against BJP leader Mampi Das. The Calcutta High Court had granted her unconditional bail, offering temporary relief amid the unfolding situation.
Separately, Gangadhar Koyal had earlier moved the High Court alleging that fabricated videos related to Sandeshkhali were being circulated on social media. He had claimed that images of party workers were misused to create misleading content. At that time, the court had observed that no severe action should be taken against him while the matter was under consideration.
With the BJP once again knocking on the doors of the High Court, the outcome of the upcoming hearing is expected to play a key role in determining how the legal proceedings involving Sandeshkhali move forward.
