Exploring a Father’s Emotional Collapse

Speaking during a media interaction alongside co-stars Ali Fazal, Sonali Bendre, Ramandeep Yadav, and members of the creative team, Bashir explained that there was no fixed guideline for shaping his character. Instead, he focused on understanding a man whose life is shattered by an unimaginable tragedy.

According to the actor, the central struggle for his character revolves around coping with the devastating loss of his children while witnessing his wife react differently to the same tragedy. He described the character as someone desperately searching for answers while everything around him falls apart.

Bashir noted that the emotional conflict became the foundation of the role. The character is forced to confront circumstances that challenge his understanding of control, resilience, and responsibility, making the journey both painful and compelling.

A War Veteran Facing a Different Battle

One of the aspects that attracted Bashir to the role was the contrast between the character’s background and his emotional vulnerability. In the series, he plays a decorated war veteran who has spent years handling difficult situations and leading others through crises.

The actor said that despite the character’s military experience and strong personality, the tragedy he faces at home is something no training can prepare him for. While he has successfully managed high-pressure situations in the past, the loss of his children leaves him powerless.

Bashir explained that portraying this breakdown was one of the most interesting parts of the performance. Rather than taking command of events, the character finds himself overwhelmed by circumstances beyond his control, highlighting the limits of human strength when confronted with personal grief.

Raakh Inspired by a Notorious Criminal Case

Set in the late 1970s, Raakh is a fictional investigative thriller that follows a crime which shocks the nation and triggers an extensive manhunt. The narrative explores the complex relationship between crime, justice, and public response during a turbulent period.

The series draws significant inspiration from the infamous Ranga-Billa kidnapping and murder case, a crime that remains one of the most widely discussed incidents in India’s criminal history. While fictionalized, the show incorporates themes of loss, investigation, and the pursuit of justice.

In the story, Bashir’s character becomes one of the emotional anchors of the narrative as he portrays the father of the murdered children. His performance has been widely discussed by viewers following the show’s release.

Focus on Human Emotion

Beyond its crime-thriller framework, Raakh places considerable emphasis on the emotional impact of tragedy on families. Bashir believes this human dimension gives the story greater depth and allows audiences to connect with the characters on a personal level.

The actor said the role ultimately represents a man confronting the collapse of everything he once relied upon. For him, that emotional journey—rather than external action—became the defining element of the character and the reason the role stood out among his recent projects.
