During the awards event, emcee Chelsea Handler led the homage, recalling Rob Reiner as “the nicest guy in Hollywood” in her opening remarks. Handler considered Reiner’s influence on others around him, his professional generosity, and his pleasant personality. He was attentive, present, and humorous when you were speaking with him,” Handler said. “And he would ask you tons of questions.” The crowd applauded her comments, and many of them rose in recognition of the late filmmaker’s services to the business.

Handler also discussed the couple’s history of supporting social and humanitarian initiatives. She emphasized that their work was driven by a strong moral compass (Page Six). “Rob and Michele were tireless in their efforts for so many important causes, all stemming from one basic idea decency,” she said. “That we should all look out for each other.”

On December 14, Rob Reiner, age 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, age 70, were discovered dead at their Los Angeles residence. According to the publication, the couple had been dead for a few hours when their 28-year-old daughter, Romy, discovered them.

Their official cause of death, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, was “multiple sharp force injuries.” A homicide was recorded as the cause of death.

According to Page Six, both deaths were burned after an examination, and their ashes were given back to their eldest son, Jake.

Page Six got the couple’s death certificates on December 23 and found that Rob and Michele died “minutes” after suffering “multiple sharp force injuries” from a “knife, by another.”

Nick Reiner, the couple’s son, was taken into custody on December 14 in relation to his parents’ deaths, which was a significant step in the case. Since then, he has been accused of two first-degree murder charges.

Nick Reiner’s arraignment is set for January 7, 2026, according to Page Six.

In the meanwhile, notable people from television and movies are gathered at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica for the 31st Critics Choice Awards.
