WasteManagement – Lucknow is set to enhance its waste management system with the introduction of cleaner and more efficient vehicles.
Lucknow is taking a significant step toward modernising its waste collection system as Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath prepares to launch a fleet of 250 electric and CNG-powered vehicles. The initiative, led by the Lucknow Municipal Corporation, is aimed at ensuring complete waste collection across all 110 wards of the city while promoting environmentally sustainable practices.
Push for Cleaner and Greener Urban Infrastructure
Officials said the addition of these vehicles marks an important move toward strengthening the city’s sanitation network. By replacing older diesel-powered vehicles with electric and CNG alternatives, authorities intend to reduce emissions and improve air quality. The effort aligns with broader goals of building a cleaner and more sustainable urban environment.
The Chief Minister highlighted that the programme reflects the government’s focus on improving living standards in urban areas. He noted that such steps contribute to developing cities that are not only efficient but also environmentally responsible.
Focus on Comprehensive Waste Collection
The municipal corporation has designed an integrated system to ensure that waste generated from households, businesses, and offices is collected, transported, and processed efficiently. To maintain accountability and transparency, waste collection activities are monitored in real time through a central command and control facility. This allows officials to track performance and address any gaps promptly, ensuring that services remain consistent across the city.
Citizen Support and Grievance Mechanism
Authorities have also introduced a dedicated grievance redressal system to improve public participation. Residents can report issues related to waste collection through a control room helpline and toll-free numbers. This mechanism is designed to ensure quick resolution of complaints and enhance trust in municipal services.

Transition Toward Sustainable Transport

At present, the city already operates a large fleet that includes hundreds of electric vehicles along with CNG units. In addition, mechanised road-sweeping machines are deployed daily on major roads to maintain cleanliness standards.
To support the growing number of electric vehicles, charging infrastructure has been expanded across multiple locations in the city. This ensures that operations remain uninterrupted and efficient.
Employment and Economic Opportunities
Beyond environmental benefits, the initiative is expected to generate employment on a large scale. Officials estimate that around 10,000 jobs will be created, both directly and indirectly, through various aspects of waste management operations.
The programme also promotes the concept of converting waste into usable resources. By encouraging recycling and reuse, authorities aim to support a circular economy where waste is treated as a valuable asset rather than discarded material.
