RLD – Ramashish Rai Resigns as UP Chief Ahead of 2027 Assembly Polls
RLD – Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) suffered a significant setback in Uttar Pradesh on Friday after its state president, Dr Ramashish Rai, stepped down from both his organisational position and the party’s primary membership. His resignation comes well ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections and follows a decision he described as being driven by ideological and ethical considerations.
Ramashish Rai Steps Down From RLD
Rai submitted his resignation to RLD national president and Union Minister Jayant Chaudhury. In his letter, he thanked Chaudhury for entrusting him with the responsibility of heading the party’s Uttar Pradesh unit and said he had made every effort to strengthen the organisation during his tenure.
The outgoing state chief highlighted his extensive visits across Uttar Pradesh, during which he met party workers and interacted with members at the grassroots level. According to Rai, these efforts were aimed at broadening the party’s organisational network and improving its presence across different parts of the state.
Rai Joined RLD in 2021
Rai became associated with the RLD in 2021 and was appointed president of its Uttar Pradesh unit the following year. Before joining the party, he had a long association with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
A native of Deoria, Rai served as the national president of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha from 1997 to 2000. During that period, he was also elected to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council as a BJP nominee.
His political career included an electoral contest in the 1993 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. Rai contested from the Fazilnagar constituency on a BJP ticket but lost the election by around 1,500 votes. Nearly three decades later, he moved to the RLD in 2021.
Ideological Concerns Cited in Resignation
In his resignation letter, Rai also referred to the political movement that influenced his entry into public life. He said he was inspired by Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan’s Total Revolution movement of 1974-75.
Rai pointed to corruption, inflation, unemployment, the erosion of democratic institutions and the need for greater administrative accountability as issues that were central to the movement. He argued that the broader objective of bringing about systemic change remains incomplete even today.
Reference to Atal Bihari Vajpayee
Rai also invoked the views of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee while explaining his concerns about the current political environment. He referred to Vajpayee’s warnings about the increasing role of money power in elections and politics, describing it as a serious challenge to democratic values.
The reference formed part of Rai’s broader explanation for leaving the RLD and highlighted the principles he said had shaped his political journey.
No Immediate Plan to Join Another Party
After submitting his resignation, Rai spoke to the media about his political future. He said that, at present, he had no plans to join another political party.
His departure leaves the RLD without its Uttar Pradesh state chief at a crucial stage, with the 2027 Assembly elections approaching. The party is yet to indicate who will take over the state leadership following Rai’s resignation.
