Education –  The recent fire tragedy in Lucknow has triggered fresh political debate over accountability, while renewed focus has also been placed on tribal welfare commitments in Uttar Pradesh.

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav has raised concerns over the response of the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) and the Fire Department following the devastating fire in Lucknow’s Aliganj locality that resulted in the deaths of 15 people. Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Yadav questioned why enforcement measures were initiated only after the incident and called for greater accountability from the authorities responsible for public safety.

Questions Raised Over Administrative Response

Referring to the decision to seal a coaching centre after the fire, Yadav said such action should have been taken earlier if any violations had existed. He argued that the state government bears responsibility for ensuring compliance with safety regulations and preventing such incidents. According to him, delayed enforcement raises serious concerns about administrative functioning and oversight.

He also questioned the timing of the action, asking why authorities acted only after lives had been lost. Yadav maintained that the government, which has been in power for several years, must answer for the effectiveness of its regulatory agencies.

Tribute to Maharani Durgavati

During the programme, Yadav met representatives of the tribal community, who welcomed and honoured him. Marking the martyrdom day of Maharani Durgavati, he paid tribute to her courage and leadership, describing her as a ruler who fearlessly defended the Gondwana kingdom during a challenging period in history.

He said Maharani Durgavati remains an enduring symbol of bravery and highlighted the important role women have played throughout India’s history in protecting society and inspiring future generations.

Focus on Tribal Community

Yadav reiterated that the tribal community holds a significant place within the Samajwadi Party’s PDA (Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) social alliance. He stated that Adivasis are an inseparable part of the coalition and deserve equal opportunities, dignity, and representation.

According to Yadav, strengthening the welfare of tribal communities would remain a priority if the Samajwadi Party returns to power in Uttar Pradesh. He said government officials would be instructed to visit tribal villages directly to understand local concerns and ensure that residents receive respectful treatment from the administration.

Welfare Promises for Education and Housing

Highlighting his party’s proposed welfare measures, Yadav said eligible tribal families would receive assistance under various government schemes, including Lohia Housing. He also promised improved educational support by arranging accommodation and meals for tribal students studying in government colleges.

He added that efforts would be made to ensure the benefits of welfare programmes reach deserving beneficiaries without unnecessary delays. According to him, these measures are intended to improve educational access and living conditions for tribal communities across the state.

Employment and Administrative Support

Speaking about future policy plans, Yadav said a Samajwadi Party government would work towards expanding employment opportunities for tribal youth. He also announced that assistance would be provided to those seeking overseas opportunities for education or work.

In addition, he proposed establishing dedicated police stations for tribal communities with the deployment of tribal police personnel. Yadav said these initiatives would help improve public services while ensuring greater confidence between tribal communities and law enforcement agencies.

The remarks combined criticism of the government’s handling of the Lucknow fire tragedy with a broader outline of the Samajwadi Party’s commitments on tribal welfare, education, employment, and public administration ahead of future political developments in Uttar Pradesh.
