Aviation – Noida International Airport Set for June Commercial Debut
Aviation – The long-awaited Noida International Airport in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh, is now scheduled to begin commercial operations on June 15, marking a significant milestone after nearly two years of delay from its originally planned launch. Authorities confirmed that the airport will initially handle domestic flights, while international operations are expected to roll out by the end of 2026.
Domestic Flights to Lead Initial Operations
According to airport officials, the first scheduled flight will be operated by IndiGo, signaling the formal start of passenger services at the new facility. Other carriers, including Akasa Air and Air India Express, are also expected to commence operations soon after the initial launch phase.
In its early stage, the airport will focus entirely on domestic connectivity, allowing systems and services to stabilise before expanding to international routes. Officials indicated that this phased approach is intended to ensure operational efficiency and a smoother passenger experience.
Passenger Traffic Projections for First Year
Authorities have set ambitious targets for the airport’s first year, estimating passenger traffic between 5 million and 6 million. This projection reflects strong expectations of demand from the National Capital Region and surrounding areas.
An official associated with the project noted that once domestic operations reach a steady pace, the airport will gradually introduce international services. While no exact date has been confirmed, preparations are underway to meet the target of launching global routes before the end of 2026.
Security Clearance and Leadership Changes
The airport’s operational launch follows the recent approval of its Aerodrome Security Programme by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security on April 27. This clearance marked the final step in meeting regulatory requirements.
The approval process had faced delays due to concerns over leadership structure, particularly regarding the appointment of a foreign national as CEO. To address these issues, Chief Financial Officer Nitu Samra was named interim CEO, replacing Christoph Schnellmann. This change helped resolve regulatory hurdles and allowed the project to move forward.
Key Milestones Ahead of Launch
The airport has already crossed several important milestones leading up to its opening. Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated the facility on March 28, while the Directorate General of Civil Aviation granted operational clearance earlier on March 6.
These approvals paved the way for final preparations, including safety checks, infrastructure readiness, and coordination with airlines.
Infrastructure and Future Expansion Plans
At present, the airport features a single runway and one passenger terminal designed to handle up to 12 million passengers annually. Despite its current capacity, the long-term vision for the airport is significantly larger.
The master plan outlines phased expansion that could eventually increase handling capacity to more than 70 million passengers each year. This would position the airport as a major aviation hub in northern India, supporting both domestic and international travel demand.
Strategic Importance for the Region
The launch of Noida International Airport is expected to ease congestion at existing airports in the Delhi-NCR region while boosting economic activity in western Uttar Pradesh. Improved connectivity is likely to benefit industries, tourism, and logistics sectors, contributing to broader regional development.
With operations set to begin in June, the airport represents a major addition to India’s aviation infrastructure and is poised to play a crucial role in meeting the country’s growing air travel demand in the coming years.
