Aviation Infrastructure – Noida International Airport Begins Commercial Operations in Uttar Pradesh
Aviation Infrastructure – Commercial passenger services are set to begin from Noida International Airport on Monday, marking a major step in the expansion of Uttar Pradesh’s aviation network. The launch is expected to improve regional connectivity and support the state’s long-term transportation and economic development plans.

First Scheduled Flight to Take Off From Lucknow
Officials confirmed that domestic airline IndiGo will become the first carrier to operate regular services from the newly established airport. The inaugural journey is scheduled to depart from Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport in Lucknow at 7:05 a.m. and land at the Jewar-based airport at 8:05 a.m. Shortly after the ceremonial service, the airport will commence its first routine commercial operation with a flight bound for Bengaluru.
Strategic Location Expected to Boost Connectivity
Situated in the Gautam Buddh Nagar district under the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority region, the airport is regarded as one of the state’s most significant infrastructure initiatives. Government officials believe the facility will enhance connectivity across northern India and strengthen the region’s role in aviation, logistics, and trade activities.
Phase One Infrastructure Ready for Operations
Authorities stated that the first phase of development has been completed and is capable of handling nearly 12 million passengers annually. Essential aviation infrastructure has already been put in place, including a runway, a modern integrated terminal, and an air traffic control facility designed to support commercial flight movements.
Regulatory Approval and Long-Term Expansion Plan
The airport secured its aerodrome licence from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on March 6, 2026, clearing the way for commercial operations. Spread across approximately 1,334 hectares, the project has been designed as a multi-phase development aimed at accommodating future growth in both passenger travel and cargo transportation.
Government projections indicate a significant rise in annual passenger capacity over the coming years. Estimates suggest the airport could handle around 30 million passengers annually by 2031, increasing to 50 million by 2036 and reaching nearly 70 million by 2040.
Vision to Become One of the Largest Airports Globally
The long-term master plan includes the development of five runways and an eventual annual passenger-handling capacity of approximately 225 million. If the project reaches its planned scale, the airport could rank among the largest aviation facilities in the world in terms of passenger volume and infrastructure capacity.
Wider Benefits for Multiple States
Apart from serving western Uttar Pradesh, the airport is expected to cater to travellers from Delhi-NCR and neighbouring states such as Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttarakhand. Improved accessibility is anticipated to reduce travel time and provide additional flight options for residents and businesses across the region.
IndiGo Plans Network Expansion
IndiGo has announced plans to gradually connect the airport with more than 16 destinations across the country. Proposed routes include major cities such as Lucknow, Hyderabad, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Srinagar, and Pantnagar, among others. The phased expansion is expected to improve domestic travel opportunities and strengthen regional air links.
Economic Impact and Employment Opportunities
Earlier this year, the airport project was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to state government estimates, the development is likely to create nearly one lakh direct and indirect jobs. Officials also expect the project to attract fresh investments in sectors such as logistics, warehousing, hospitality, manufacturing, and related industries, contributing to broader economic growth in the years ahead.
