WorldCup – Neymar Faces Fresh Fitness Concern Ahead of Brazil Opener

WorldCup –  Brazil’s preparations for the upcoming FIFA World Cup have encountered another moment of uncertainty after Neymar missed Santos’ midweek Copa Sudamericana fixture because of a calf problem. The development comes only weeks before Brazil begin their campaign against Morocco in the tournament opener.

Santos Downplays Injury Worries

The experienced forward was absent from Santos’ home match against San Lorenzo on Wednesday, raising concerns among supporters about his condition before international duty. However, club officials quickly moved to ease fears surrounding the severity of the issue.

Santos team physician Rodrigo Zogaib stated that the injury is not considered serious and expressed confidence that Neymar should be available for Brazil’s initial World Cup training camp later this month. According to Brazilian media reports, the medical staff even believe there is a possibility the attacker could return to action for Santos in their upcoming clash against Deportivo Cuenca next week.

The latest setback nonetheless adds to ongoing concerns over Neymar’s physical condition after a lengthy period disrupted by injuries.

Long Recovery After Serious Knee Injury

Neymar has struggled to maintain consistent playing time since suffering a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament during Brazil’s World Cup qualifier against Uruguay in October 2023. The injury kept him out of international football for an extended period and forced a difficult recovery process.

Since rejoining Santos, the club where he began his professional career, the Brazilian star has shown flashes of quality but has continued to deal with recurring fitness problems. Across all competitions, he has managed 17 goals in 38 appearances during his latest spell with the club.

Despite limited recent action for the national side, Neymar remains Brazil’s highest-ever scorer with 79 goals in 128 appearances. His experience and leadership continue to make him a valuable figure within the squad setup.

Ancelotti Confident About Neymar’s Role

Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti recently addressed questions regarding Neymar’s selection in the 26-player squad for the World Cup. The Italian coach explained that the decision was not solely based on current form but also on the player’s importance within the group.

Ancelotti noted that Neymar had recently managed a run of matches and could still improve his physical condition before Brazil’s first game of the tournament. He also highlighted the forward’s experience on football’s biggest stage and the positive influence he brings inside the dressing room.

The coaching staff are believed to be carefully managing Neymar’s workload in hopes of having him fully prepared for the competition.

Brazil Prepare for Challenging Group Stage

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will take place across the United States, Mexico and Canada between June 11 and July 19. Brazil are scheduled to begin their campaign against Morocco in New Jersey on June 13 before facing Haiti and Scotland in Group C.

The Brazilian squad enters the tournament aiming to add another world title to its historic record, with expectations once again high around one of football’s most successful nations.

Neymar’s availability is expected to remain a major talking point in the weeks leading up to the competition, particularly given his importance to Brazil’s attacking setup.

Neymar Nears Historic World Cup Milestone

If selected for Brazil’s opening match, Neymar will participate in his fourth FIFA World Cup after previously appearing in the 2014, 2018 and 2022 editions. The milestone would place him alongside several legendary Brazilian footballers who have featured in four World Cup tournaments.

The forward could also achieve another historic feat by becoming only the second Brazilian player after Pele to wear the country’s iconic No. 10 shirt in four separate World Cups.

Across his World Cup career so far, Neymar has played 13 matches, scoring eight goals and contributing three assists, underlining his continued influence on the international stage despite persistent injury struggles.
