Officials said the decision will remain in effect until weather conditions improve and travel routes are inspected for safe movement.
Authorities Suspend Pilgrimage for Safety
The Uttarakhand administration announced on Tuesday that the Char Dham Yatra would remain suspended on both Tuesday and Wednesday following continuous rainfall that disrupted key pilgrimage routes. According to Garhwal Commissioner Anand Swaroop, the precautionary measure was taken after multiple landslides blocked important stretches of the roads leading to the revered shrines.
Officials stated that the India Meteorological Department had also issued a heavy rainfall alert for several parts of the state, increasing the risk of fresh landslides and flash floods. Pilgrims have been advised not to begin or continue their journey until authorities confirm that travel conditions have become safe.
Landslides Disrupt Key Routes
Heavy rain over the past two days has caused widespread disruption across Uttarakhand, with several roads becoming inaccessible due to debris and damaged infrastructure. Rescue and maintenance teams have been deployed to assess the affected areas and begin restoration work wherever conditions permit.
Authorities said the pilgrimage will resume only after engineers and local administration complete safety inspections and certify that the routes are suitable for public travel. Officials emphasized that protecting the lives of devotees remains the highest priority.
Yamunotri Trek Suffers Major Damage
One of the most significant incidents occurred in Uttarkashi district, where a portion of the Jankichatti-Yamunotri pedestrian route gave way on Tuesday. The collapse took place near the Ram Mandir area after the water level in a nearby river rose sharply because of continuous rainfall.
Officials explained that the swollen river weakened the ground beneath the pathway, leading to the collapse of a section frequently used by pilgrims heading toward the Yamunotri shrine. The damaged stretch has now been declared unsafe, and access has been restricted until repair work can be completed.
Weather Conditions Affect Daily Life
The spell of uninterrupted rain, which began on Monday night, has affected normal life across several districts of Uttarakhand. Besides disrupting transportation, the adverse weather has heightened concerns over possible flash floods, slope failures, and additional landslides in vulnerable mountainous regions.
Local authorities are closely monitoring rivers and rainfall patterns while emergency response teams remain on alert. Residents living in sensitive areas have also been advised to remain cautious and follow official instructions issued by district administrations.
Schools Closed in Five Districts
As a precautionary measure, educational institutions in five districts will remain closed on Wednesday. The decision was taken after the latest weather forecast warned of continued heavy rainfall across parts of the state.
District administrations have urged people to avoid non-essential travel, especially in hilly regions where unstable slopes and overflowing streams could pose serious risks. Officials are expected to review the situation daily before deciding when schools and the pilgrimage can safely resume.
