SuryanshShedge – Former India cricketer and ex-national selector Jatin Paranjape believes Suryansh Shedge has the ability to become a long-term asset for Indian cricket after earning his first national team selection for the upcoming T20I tours of Ireland and England. According to Paranjape, the young seam-bowling all-rounder possesses the technical skills, temperament and mindset required to succeed at the highest level for many years.
Maiden National Call-Up Comes at a Key Moment
Shedge was drafted into the Indian squad after Nitish Kumar Reddy was ruled out with a left quadriceps injury that worsened during the third ODI against Afghanistan in Chennai last week. With Hardik Pandya also unavailable due to a leg issue, the spotlight is expected to fall on India’s next generation of fast-bowling all-rounders, a category where quality options remain limited.
Paranjape said Shedge’s natural suitability for the T20 format should help him adapt quickly to international cricket, even though the intensity at that level is significantly higher than franchise competitions. He acknowledged there may be an adjustment period but expressed complete confidence in the youngster’s ability to establish himself in the Indian setup over the long term.
Strong Performances Built the Case for Selection
The Mumbai cricketer arrives in the national squad after a series of impressive performances across domestic and representative cricket. Playing for Punjab Kings in IPL 2026, Shedge scored 158 runs from seven innings at a strike rate exceeding 175 while maintaining a healthy average.
His form continued with India A during the 50-over tri-series in Sri Lanka, where he contributed valuable runs and shouldered bowling responsibilities across multiple matches. Those performances strengthened his credentials and ultimately helped secure his first senior India call-up.
Conditions in Ireland and England Seen as Advantage
Having worked closely with Shedge over the last two years at the Vasoo Paranjape Cricket Centre in Mumbai, Paranjape believes the venues selected for the tour could work in the youngster’s favour.
He explained that the conditions in Ireland and England generally assist seam bowlers through movement in the air and off the surface, while also offering opportunities for technically sound batters. In his view, making a debut in such an environment could ease the transition into international cricket and provide an ideal platform for the all-rounder to showcase his abilities.
Focus on Refinement Rather Than Reinvention
Paranjape revealed that coaching discussions with Shedge largely centered on fine-tuning existing strengths rather than making major technical changes. While some adjustments were made to his batting and bowling mechanics, much of the effort focused on helping him become more comfortable mentally and reinforcing confidence in his natural game.
The former selector highlighted Shedge’s previous achievements, including playing a decisive role in Mumbai’s Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy success, as evidence that the talent was already present. The goal, he said, was to ensure the player remained mentally relaxed while continuing to trust his instincts.
Mental Strength Viewed as a Major Asset
A significant part of the coaching process involved simplifying decision-making and improving self-talk during high-pressure situations. Paranjape explained that successful players often rely on clear and repeatable thought processes, and those principles formed an important part of their work together.
He also noted that subtle technical refinements, including improving the flow of Shedge’s bat swing, were incorporated alongside mental conditioning exercises. According to him, the all-rounder remains at the beginning of his professional journey, with considerable room for growth in the years ahead.

Paranjape expressed confidence that young leaders such as Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill would help create a supportive environment whenever Shedge receives his opportunity. He particularly praised Gill’s understanding and empathy, suggesting the ODI captain would appreciate the challenges faced by players during their early international appearances.
The veteran coach also credited Shedge’s parents, Prashant and Priyadarshini, for their unwavering support throughout his cricket journey. He described them as committed and forward-thinking parents who made significant sacrifices to help their son pursue his ambitions.
