Rugby –Mohit Khatri’s remarkable journey reflects how dedication, consistent effort, and strong grassroots support are helping Indian rugby steadily grow on the international stage.

Rugby mohit khatri olympic dream

From the wrestling-dominated state of Haryana to becoming a key member of India’s rugby squad, Mohit Khatri has built his career through determination, resilience, and years of hard work. The player from Kundli village in Sonipat district has overcome early setbacks to establish himself in the national team and is now focused on helping India make further progress in international rugby, with Olympic qualification remaining his ultimate ambition.

A Childhood Introduction That Changed Everything

Mohit’s introduction to rugby came during his school days, thanks to his elder brother, Vikas Khatri, who previously captained the Indian rugby team. While Mohit initially spent his weekends playing football with friends, a visit to one of his brother’s rugby training sessions sparked an interest that soon transformed into a lifelong passion.

Although he knew very little about the sport’s rules when he first stepped onto the field, his enthusiasm for the game continued to grow. What started as an enjoyable activity gradually became a daily routine before evolving into a professional sporting career that eventually earned him the opportunity to represent India.

Learning the Game Through Club Rugby

To improve his skills, Mohit joined the Delhi Hurricanes rugby club, where his brother also trained. Under experienced coaches, he learned the fundamentals of rugby and steadily progressed through club-level competitions before representing Haryana in state tournaments.

His early competitive years, however, were far from easy. Tournament after tournament ended in disappointment, with repeated defeats testing both his confidence and the morale of his teammates. Rather than giving up, the setbacks became a source of motivation that encouraged the squad to train harder and improve every aspect of their game.

Breakthrough Success Opened National Team Doors

The hard work eventually paid off in 2015 when Mohit secured his first major achievement by winning a gold medal at the School Nationals. That success proved to be a turning point in his career, helping him establish himself at the state level before receiving his first selection to the Indian rugby team.

Since then, Mohit has continued to strengthen his place in the national setup while benefiting from support provided by the Sports Authority of India (SAI), the national rugby federation, and government sports initiatives. Through the sports quota, he also secured employment with the postal department, allowing him to continue pursuing his sporting ambitions while maintaining financial stability.

Coach Highlights Mohit’s Importance

India head coach Paul Albaladejo has praised Mohit’s contribution to the squad, describing him as a player whose speed, technical ability, and leadership make him an important asset during difficult matches. According to the coach, his ability to remain composed under pressure is particularly valuable when India faces stronger international opponents.

Albaladejo also believes Indian rugby has significant room for growth, adding that consistent performances at major tournaments will play a vital role in increasing the sport’s popularity across the country.

Focus Turns to Asia Rugby Sevens Series

The Indian team is now preparing for the Asia Rugby Sevens Series 2026, scheduled to begin in Suzhou, China, on August 29. Mohit acknowledges that India still trails leading Asian nations such as Japan and China but believes recent improvements are helping reduce the competitive gap.

He credits initiatives like the Rugby Premier League along with enhanced training facilities and athlete support for raising the overall standard of Indian rugby. Looking beyond the upcoming tournament, Mohit’s biggest personal objective remains qualifying for the Olympic Games and representing India on the world’s largest sporting stage.

For Mohit, wearing the national jersey while hearing India’s national anthem at the Olympics would represent the greatest achievement of his sporting career. As India continues its preparations for major international competitions, his journey serves as an example of how perseverance and structured support can help athletes transform early struggles into national success.
