Golf – Indian Duo Stay in Strong Contention After Second Round in Malaysia
Golf – India’s young golfers continued to impress on the international stage as Ceerat Kang and Guntas Kaur Sandhu remained firmly in the race for top honors after two rounds of the Malaysia Ladies Amateur Open. Their consistent performances also helped India hold third place in the team competition, keeping the country within striking distance of the leaders heading into the next phase of the tournament.
India Holds Third Position in Team Competition
Representing the Indian Golf Union (IGU), the two-member Indian squad produced another solid day at the Glenmarie Golf & Country Club on Tuesday. Together, Ceerat and Guntas recorded a combined score of four-over 292 after two rounds. That leaves India four strokes behind hosts Malaysia, who currently lead the team standings.
The prestigious championship has attracted leading amateur golfers from across Asia, making the strong showing by the Indian pair a significant achievement. With only a narrow gap separating the top teams, India remains well placed to challenge for the title.
Ceerat Kang Climbs Into the Top Six
Nineteen-year-old Ceerat Kang from Panchkula delivered one of the better rounds of the day, finishing with a one-under-par 71. Her total score improved to one-over 145, placing her alone in sixth position on the individual leaderboard.
Ceerat made an impressive start by collecting three birdies during her opening nine holes. She maintained steady control for much of the round before late bogeys on the 16th and 18th holes prevented an even stronger finish. Despite those setbacks, she remains comfortably inside the top 10 with another round still to play.
Guntas Kaur Sandhu Continues Consistent Run
Fifteen-year-old Guntas Kaur Sandhu from Chandigarh also stayed among the leading contenders despite a challenging day on the course. She returned a two-over 74, which left her tied for seventh place in the individual standings.
Her round featured several momentum swings. Guntas mixed three birdies with two bogeys over the front nine before adding another birdie and two more bogeys on the inward stretch. Although consistency proved difficult, she managed to remain close to the tournament leaders and continues to strengthen India’s overall campaign.
Malaysian Golfer Takes the Overall Lead
Malaysia’s Amberly Zaira Binti Zamra produced the standout performance of the second round. A superb five-under-par 67 lifted her to the top of the individual leaderboard with a total score of two-under 142.
Her excellent round created a slight advantage over the chasing group, but with another day of competition remaining, several players—including the Indian representatives—still have an opportunity to close the gap.
Strong International Participation
The 40th edition of the Malaysia Ladies Amateur Open has brought together talented amateur golfers from 11 participating nations. Players from China, Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei, Indonesia, Thailand, Brunei, South Korea, the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia and India are competing for both individual and team honors.
The championship is being played over 54 holes for the individual title, while the team championship is decided after the first 36 holes based on the combined scores of each country’s two golfers.
Guntas Builds on an Impressive Amateur Record
Guntas entered the tournament following an outstanding domestic season on the Indian Golf Union amateur circuit. During the 2025-26 campaign, she secured four tournament victories and finished inside the top 10 on 13 occasions from 20 appearances.
Her titles came at the IGU Eastern India Ladies, IGU Southern India Ladies, IGU Maharashtra Ladies and IGU West Bengal Ladies championships, highlighting her rapid rise as one of India’s most promising young amateur golfers.
