Cricket League – A landmark moment for Mumbai cricket unfolded on Tuesday when the inaugural edition of the Nuvama Private T20 Mumbai Women’s League officially began at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. The opening fixture delivered an entertaining contest, with SOBO Mumbai Falcons registering a 16-run win over Thane Sky Risers to kick off their campaign on a positive note.

The Falcons produced a disciplined all-round performance, highlighted by an impressive bowling effort from Indian cricketer Sayali Satghare. Leading her side with confidence, Satghare picked up three crucial wickets and played a key role in restricting the opposition during a challenging run chase.

Falcons Recover After Early Setbacks

After being put under pressure early in their innings, SOBO Mumbai Falcons managed to rebuild and post a competitive total of 173 for six from their allotted 20 overs. Thane Sky Risers captain Saima Thakor enjoyed a dream start by claiming a wicket with the very first ball of the tournament before striking again in the same over.

However, several missed opportunities in the field proved costly for the Sky Risers. A number of dropped catches allowed the Falcons’ batters to settle and capitalize later in the innings. Hurley Gala remained unbeaten on 45 and anchored the late charge, while Riya Chaudhari contributed 43 runs. Useful innings from Simran Shaikh (30) and Sarika Koli (26) further strengthened the Falcons’ total.

Thane’s Chase Falls Short Despite Promising Contributions

Pursuing a target of 174, Thane Sky Risers showed determination but struggled to maintain momentum as wickets fell at regular intervals. Opener Mansi Patil played a fighting knock of 46 runs and kept her team’s hopes alive during the chase.

Saima Thakor added 29 runs after her impressive start with the ball, while Mahek Pokar looked comfortable before retiring hurt after scoring 23. Despite several batters getting starts, none could convert them into a match-defining innings.

Khushi Bhatia’s Late Effort Not Enough

As the required run rate climbed, wicketkeeper-batter Khushi Bhatia injected fresh energy into the chase. Her quick-fire 28 from just 16 deliveries brought temporary hope to the Sky Risers and shifted some pressure back onto the Falcons.

However, her dismissal in the penultimate over effectively ended Thane’s chances of completing the chase. The Falcons maintained their composure in the final stages and successfully defended their total to secure an important opening victory.

Men’s Tournament Opened With Super Over Thriller

The excitement surrounding the Mumbai T20 League had already begun a day earlier during the men’s competition. Defending champions Mumbai South Central Maratha Royals edged past Aakash Tigers Mumbai Western Suburb in a dramatic Super Over encounter.

Both teams finished level on 165 runs after 20 overs, forcing the contest into a tie-breaker. The Siddhesh Lad-led Maratha Royals posted 16 runs in the Super Over and then restricted the Sarfaraz Khan-led Tigers to 11, sealing a hard-earned victory in one of the tournament’s most memorable early matches.

Busy Schedule Ahead at Wankhede Stadium

The tournament promises nearly two weeks of high-quality cricket, featuring some of Mumbai’s most talented players competing across both men’s and women’s competitions. A total of 30 matches are scheduled to be played at Wankhede Stadium, with the championship match set for June 13.
