Priyanka Gandhi Applauds Government Initiative

Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra welcomed the launch of the ‘Priyadarshini’ scheme and described it as an important step toward fulfilling a long-standing public commitment. Sharing her views on social media, she said the programme goes far beyond providing free transportation and represents a meaningful effort to strengthen the independence and confidence of women.

According to her, easier access to public transport can help women pursue education, employment, and other opportunities without the burden of daily travel expenses. She also congratulated the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) government for implementing the promise and creating new possibilities for countless beneficiaries across Kerala.

Scheme Designed to Expand Opportunities

The state government has positioned the initiative as a significant social welfare measure intended to promote inclusion and economic participation. By removing transportation costs, officials believe the programme can make everyday travel more accessible for women and transgender persons, especially those who rely on public buses for work, education, healthcare, and other essential needs.

Authorities expect the scheme to ease financial pressure on regular commuters while encouraging greater participation in economic and social activities. The government has highlighted that improved mobility often plays a crucial role in increasing access to opportunities and strengthening community engagement.

Former Transport Minister Supports Move

Former Kerala Transport Minister K.B. Ganesh Kumar also expressed support for the free travel programme. He noted that the government had made the commitment before the elections and is now delivering on that promise.

While appreciating the initiative, Kumar suggested that the benefits should extend broadly to women and children, including young boys. He further recommended that the government consider introducing insurance-related support for female passengers to enhance safety and provide additional protection.

Speaking on the matter, he said discussions regarding such provisions had already been raised with ministers and expressed confidence that practical solutions could be explored in the future.

Focus on Social Inclusion

The Priyadarshini scheme is expected to benefit a large section of society, particularly those who depend on public transport for their daily commute. Policymakers believe that reducing travel expenses can contribute to improved household savings and make it easier for beneficiaries to access educational institutions, workplaces, and public services.

The initiative also reflects a broader effort to create a more inclusive transportation system by ensuring that mobility challenges do not become barriers to personal and professional growth. Supporters of the programme argue that reliable and affordable transport can have a lasting impact on women’s participation in various sectors of society.

Expected Impact Across Kerala

With the programme now operational, thousands of passengers are expected to take advantage of the free travel facility in the coming months. Government officials and supporters view the measure as an investment in social welfare that could help improve quality of life for many families.

As implementation progresses, authorities will closely monitor the scheme’s effectiveness and its contribution to expanding access, enhancing mobility, and supporting economic empowerment across Kerala.
