WelfareScheme – Government welfare verification and beneficiary compliance updates – The Maharashtra government has intensified scrutiny of welfare beneficiaries after identifying cases where financial assistance was received by individuals who did not qualify under the Mukhyamantri Mazi Ladki Bahin Yojana. Authorities have initiated recovery measures while reinforcing eligibility checks to ensure that assistance reaches only deserving recipients.
The Maharashtra government has launched administrative action against women employed in government departments who were found to have received benefits under the Mukhyamantri Mazi Ladki Bahin Yojana despite not meeting the prescribed eligibility criteria. Alongside disciplinary proceedings, officials have also ordered the recovery of funds from men and other ineligible beneficiaries who were wrongly granted financial assistance through the scheme.
Verification Process Reveals Irregularities
Women and Child Development Minister Aditi Tatkare informed the Maharashtra Assembly about the action while responding to a starred question during the ongoing monsoon session. The issue was raised by several legislators seeking details about the implementation of the welfare programme and the verification process carried out by the government.
According to the minister, departmental verification uncovered instances where women serving as government employees had received monthly financial support even though they were not entitled to the benefit. Concerned government departments have now been instructed to begin disciplinary proceedings and recover the amount already paid.
Recovery Proceedings Ordered for Wrongful Claims
The government has also identified cases in which male beneficiaries received assistance under the scheme despite the programme being exclusively intended for eligible women. Officials have stopped further payments to such beneficiaries, and district collectors across Maharashtra have been directed to begin recovery proceedings under the applicable revenue recovery provisions.
The issue of reclaiming funds from individuals who received benefits without eligibility has remained a major concern, with Opposition members repeatedly demanding strict action to safeguard public money.
e-KYC Requirement Led to Temporary Suspension
Lawmakers also sought clarification regarding women from economically weaker families whose payments were halted because they were unable to complete the mandatory Aadhaar-based e-KYC verification. They pointed out that several beneficiaries faced practical difficulties due to drought conditions, extreme heat and the absence of necessary documents.
Responding to these concerns, Tatkare said the Aadhaar-linked e-KYC process was introduced to verify the authenticity of beneficiaries and prevent misuse of the scheme. Financial assistance was temporarily suspended for applicants who did not complete the verification process until their eligibility could be confirmed.
Government Extends Verification Deadline
The minister stated that beneficiaries were originally required to complete the mandatory e-KYC process by November 18, 2025, in accordance with a Government Resolution issued on September 18, 2025. However, after authorities found that a significant number of beneficiaries had not completed the required verification within the stipulated period, the deadline was extended until December 31, 2025.
The extension was intended to provide eligible women with additional time to complete the authentication process and continue receiving financial assistance without unnecessary disruption.
About the Mukhyamantri Mazi Ladki Bahin Yojana
Introduced by the Mahayuti government in July 2024, the Mukhyamantri Mazi Ladki Bahin Yojana is designed to strengthen the financial security of eligible women across Maharashtra. Under the programme, qualified beneficiaries receive Rs 1,500 every month through Direct Benefit Transfer into Aadhaar-linked bank accounts.
The initiative aims to improve household income, promote financial independence among women and provide regular economic support, particularly to families from economically weaker sections and rural areas. The latest verification exercise reflects the government’s effort to ensure that public welfare funds are distributed only to genuine beneficiaries while preventing misuse of the scheme.
