In response to the rapidly changing conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a Red Alert, warning residents to remain cautious as severe weather was expected to continue for several hours.
Red Alert Issued as Winds Intensify
The weather department reported that the storm system could remain active for at least three hours. Officials warned that wind speeds in some locations might approach 100 kmph, creating potentially hazardous conditions. Along with strong winds, forecasts indicated the possibility of thunderstorms, lightning strikes, and light showers across several districts of the region.
The advisory was released shortly after 2:30 p.m., covering Delhi and nearby areas in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. Within a short period, powerful gusts swept through the capital, lifting large amounts of dust into the air and reducing visibility on major roads and residential stretches.
Visibility Drops Across Several Areas
Residents in different parts of Delhi witnessed dark skies and dense clouds of dust moving rapidly across the city. Traffic movement slowed in some places as motorists navigated through reduced visibility. Open spaces, markets, and residential neighborhoods were also affected by the strong winds that accompanied the weather disturbance.
The sudden weather development marked a sharp contrast to the hot and dry conditions that had dominated the region in recent days. The drop in temperature provided temporary relief from the persistent heat that had been experienced across Delhi-NCR.
Meteorologists Explain Sudden Weather Shift
According to weather experts, the severe conditions developed due to a combination of high temperatures and atmospheric instability. Prolonged heat over the region helped build energy in the atmosphere, creating favorable conditions for the formation of dust storms and thunderclouds.
Meteorologists explained that moisture-bearing winds entering the region interacted with this unstable atmosphere, leading to the development of thunderstorms and associated weather activity. This process often results in strong winds, lightning, and scattered rainfall during the pre-monsoon period.
Rain Expected to Bring Additional Relief
The IMD stated that light rainfall was likely to follow the dust storm in several areas. Rainfall is expected to help settle suspended dust particles, improving air quality and visibility while contributing to a further reduction in temperatures.
Weather observers also indicated that some parts of Delhi-NCR could receive moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm activity. However, the intensity and duration of rainfall may vary from one locality to another.
Alert Covers Neighbouring States
The weather warning was not limited to Delhi alone. Several districts in neighboring states were also placed under observation due to the advancing storm system.
In Haryana, locations such as Sonipat, Rohtak, Kharkhoda, Bhiwani, and Charkhi Dadri were included in the advisory. In western Uttar Pradesh, warnings were issued for Bagpat, Khekra, Pilakhua, and Sikandrabad. Parts of Rajasthan, including Alwar, Bhiwadi, Tijara, and Deeg, were also expected to experience the impact of the changing weather.
Conditions Likely to Improve by Evening
The IMD said gusty winds ranging between 50 and 80 kmph, along with thunderstorms and scattered rainfall, could continue affecting Delhi and nearby regions during the afternoon hours. Despite the intense weather spell, forecasters expect conditions to gradually stabilize later in the day, with drier weather likely returning by evening as the storm system moves away from the region.
