WeatherAlert – Authorities in Maharashtra have announced precautionary measures as intense monsoon conditions continue to affect several districts. Palghar has declared a holiday for all educational institutions, while Mumbai and Thane remain on alert with weather officials forecasting heavy rain and strong winds.
Palghar Shuts Educational Institutions as Precaution
The Palghar district administration has ordered a one-day closure of all schools, colleges, Anganwadis and other educational institutions on Thursday, July 23, following persistent heavy rainfall and an adverse weather forecast. The decision was announced through an official circular issued by the District Information Office, which confirmed that all educational establishments across the district would remain closed for the day.
District Collector Dr. Indu Rani Jakhad approved the precautionary measure after reviewing the prevailing weather conditions and the latest forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Officials stated that the primary objective is to ensure the safety of students, teachers and staff during the ongoing spell of severe monsoon weather.
Holiday Covers All Categories of Institutions
The closure order applies to a wide range of educational facilities throughout Palghar district. These include government and private primary and secondary schools, Zilla Parishad schools, municipal schools, aided and unaided institutions, Ashram schools, colleges, Anganwadis and centres operating under the Commissionerate of Vocational Education and Training.
Authorities clarified that the decision was taken solely as a preventive measure to reduce travel risks for students and educational staff while heavy rainfall continues across the district.
Weather Alerts Continue Across the Mumbai Region
The IMD has placed Mumbai and Thane under a Yellow Alert for Thursday, indicating the possibility of heavy rainfall at isolated places. The forecast also warns of strong surface winds ranging between 50 and 60 kmph, with gusts that may reach up to 70 kmph during the day.
Meanwhile, Palghar and neighbouring Raigad remain under an Orange Alert due to the likelihood of more intense rainfall accompanied by strong winds. The weather department has advised residents to remain cautious, particularly in low-lying areas that are vulnerable to waterlogging and localized flooding.
The previous day, July 22, the IMD had issued a Red Alert for Palghar, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall across several locations and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places. The latest precautionary steps by the district administration follow those warnings as rainfall activity continues across the region.
Schools in Mumbai, Thane and Raigad to Remain Open
Unlike Palghar, authorities in Mumbai, Thane and Raigad have not declared a holiday for educational institutions. Schools and colleges across these districts are scheduled to function as usual on Thursday despite the weather warnings.
However, several educational institutions have advised parents to use their own judgment before sending children to school. In areas experiencing significant waterlogging or where travel appears unsafe because of heavy rain, parents have been encouraged to prioritize student safety and keep children at home if necessary.
Local administrations continue to monitor the evolving weather situation closely. Residents have also been advised to follow official weather updates and any emergency instructions issued by district authorities as monsoon conditions remain active across parts of Maharashtra.
