Food Safety – FDA Shuts BMC Headquarters Canteen After Hygiene Violations Surface

Food Safety –The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has directed the immediate closure of the canteen operating inside the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) headquarters after a complaint alleged that a fly was found in a glass of buttermilk served on the premises. The incident prompted officials to launch a detailed inspection, leading to the discovery of multiple hygiene-related shortcomings. Authorities said the action forms part of an ongoing effort to strengthen food safety compliance across the city.

Inspection Reveals Hygiene Deficiencies

Soon after receiving the complaint, an FDA team visited the BMC headquarters canteen and carried out an inspection that lasted for nearly five hours. During the visit, officials examined food preparation areas, storage facilities, kitchen operations, and sanitation practices. According to the inspection findings, several lapses were identified in food handling procedures and overall cleanliness. The inspection reportedly revealed conditions that did not meet the required food safety and hygiene standards expected from establishments serving the public.

Immediate Closure Order Issued

Following the inspection, the FDA served an immediate closure notice to Kamal Caterers, the company responsible for operating the canteen. Officials stated that the closure would remain in effect until the operator addresses the identified deficiencies and complies with applicable food safety regulations. The regulatory action reflects the authority’s commitment to ensuring that food served in public institutions meets prescribed quality and hygiene norms.

Contractor Penalised by Civic Authorities

Apart from the closure order, the contractor also faced financial penalties. The BMC’s Health and Labour Department imposed a fine of ₹50,000 on Kamal Caterers for violations linked to hygiene and food safety practices. Civic officials said the penalty was imposed after reviewing the inspection findings and considering the seriousness of the reported lapses. The action is intended to reinforce accountability among food service operators functioning within government premises.

Part of Ongoing Citywide Enforcement

The latest action comes amid an intensified inspection campaign being carried out by the Maharashtra FDA across Mumbai. Over the past several weeks, the department has increased surprise inspections at restaurants, institutional kitchens, hospital canteens, and other food establishments to ensure compliance with food safety regulations. Authorities have repeatedly stated that maintaining hygienic food preparation environments remains a priority in protecting public health.

Similar Measures Taken at Other Establishments

This is not the first instance of regulatory action during the ongoing enforcement drive. In recent weeks, the FDA has also initiated action against several food establishments, including the canteen at KEM Hospital, after inspections raised concerns over sanitation and food handling standards. Officials have indicated that inspections will continue across the city, with strict measures against operators found violating prescribed norms.

The latest enforcement action highlights the growing emphasis on food safety oversight in public institutions. Authorities have maintained that routine inspections, prompt responses to public complaints, and strict enforcement of hygiene standards are essential to ensuring that food served at civic and healthcare facilities remains safe for consumers.
