Weather – Rain Brings Partial Relief Amid Persistent Heat in Tamil Nadu
Weather – Tamil Nadu is expected to witness a mix of heat and scattered rainfall on Wednesday, as forecast by the India Meteorological Department.

Parts of Tamil Nadu are set to experience light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning at isolated locations. While these showers may offer temporary relief from the intense heat, weather officials indicate that high temperatures will continue to dominate across several regions.
Rainfall Likely Across Multiple Regions
According to the latest forecast, rainfall activity is expected in southern districts of Tamil Nadu, along the northern coastal belt, and in the Union Territories of Puducherry and Karaikal. The hilly stretches of the Western Ghats are also likely to receive showers. However, most interior northern districts may remain largely dry, with limited chances of precipitation.
In Chennai, the sky is expected to stay partly cloudy through the day. Some areas of the city may receive moderate rainfall, although it is unlikely to significantly alter the prevailing heat conditions.
Heatwave Continues to Impact Several Districts
Despite the possibility of rainfall, the heatwave continues to affect large parts of the state. On Tuesday, several locations recorded unusually high temperatures. Vellore stood out as the hottest area, registering a maximum temperature of 42.2 degrees Celsius. Karur followed closely with around 41 degrees, while Erode and Namakkal recorded temperatures near the 40-degree mark.
Other regions also reported elevated temperatures. Tirupattur recorded 39.5 degrees Celsius, Tiruchy saw 39 degrees, and Tiruttani registered 38.9 degrees. Additional areas such as Paramathi, Dharmapuri, and Palayamkottai also experienced high daytime temperatures. Meanwhile, cities including Madurai, Salem, and the Tiruchy airport area reported temperatures exceeding 37 degrees Celsius.
Temperatures Above Seasonal Normals
Meteorological observations indicate that maximum temperatures in several parts of Tamil Nadu are currently 2 to 3 degrees above the seasonal average. This sustained rise suggests ongoing heat stress conditions, particularly during peak afternoon hours.
Weather experts caution that even with intermittent rainfall, a noticeable drop in temperature is unlikely in the immediate future. The brief showers may ease discomfort temporarily, but they will not be sufficient to counter the broader heatwave trend affecting the region.
Forecast for the Coming Days
Looking ahead, similar weather conditions are expected to continue on April 9, with isolated rainfall likely in different parts of the state. From April 10 onwards, scattered light to moderate showers may occur across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.
However, as the days progress, rainfall activity is expected to gradually become limited to specific areas, particularly the Western Ghats and delta regions. Other parts of the state may continue to experience hot and dry conditions.
Meteorological Factors Behind Current Weather Pattern
Experts attribute the current combination of heat and localized rainfall to a wind discontinuity extending from eastern India towards the Gulf of Mannar. This atmospheric feature is supporting convective activity, which leads to the development of clouds, thunderstorms, and short spells of rain.
Advisory for Residents
Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious during this period of fluctuating weather. People are encouraged to stay hydrated, avoid direct exposure to the sun during peak hours, and take necessary precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses.
While occasional rainfall may provide brief relief, above-normal temperatures are expected to persist across many parts of Tamil Nadu in the coming days.
