Weather – Heavy Rain and Hailstorm Bring Relief Across Delhi NCR
Weather – After days of persistent heat, parts of Delhi-NCR experienced a sudden change in weather on Thursday as rain, strong winds, and hail swept through several areas. The shift brought immediate respite from high temperatures, with many residents witnessing dark clouds and gusty conditions by afternoon.

Sudden Weather Shift Across the Capital Region
The change began with thick cloud cover spreading across the city, followed by thunderstorms and scattered rainfall. Wind speeds in some locations reached up to 70 kmph, intensifying the impact of the storm. Several areas in Delhi, along with nearby Noida and Ghaziabad, also reported brief hailstorms, adding to the dramatic shift in weather conditions.
The rainfall was uneven but widespread enough to affect daily routines. Traffic movement slowed in several parts due to waterlogging and reduced visibility during peak hours.
Forecast Points to Continued Unsettled Conditions
According to the India Meteorological Department, similar weather patterns are likely to continue over the coming days. The agency has predicted cloudy skies with intermittent rain, thunderstorms, and lightning activity until May 6.
An orange alert was issued earlier in the day, indicating the possibility of more intense weather developments within a short period. Such alerts advise residents to stay prepared for disruptions, particularly those caused by strong winds and lightning.
Areas Likely to See More Rainfall Activity
Weather officials indicated that isolated parts of the city could continue to experience thunderstorms along with light to moderate rainfall. Localities in east and northeast Delhi, along with adjoining areas of Noida, were among those identified as vulnerable to such conditions.
In central and south Delhi as well, including key administrative and residential zones, rain accompanied by lightning was expected intermittently. The spread of the system suggested that no single part of the city would remain completely unaffected.
Drop in Temperature Brings Relief
The sudden rainfall and strong winds led to a noticeable fall in temperatures across Delhi-NCR. For many residents, this provided much-needed relief after several days of uncomfortable heat.
The cooler conditions were especially evident during the evening hours, when outdoor temperatures dropped significantly compared to earlier in the week.
Air Quality Remains Moderate
Despite the rainfall, Delhi’s air quality remained in the moderate category. The Air Quality Index stood at 148 on Thursday, reflecting stable conditions without major improvement or deterioration.
Experts note that while rain can temporarily reduce pollutants, sustained improvements depend on longer-term weather patterns and emission levels.
Civic Measures to Address Heat Wave Impact
Alongside the changing weather, authorities have continued preparations to manage heat-related challenges during the summer. The Municipal Corporation has issued guidelines aimed at minimizing the effects of high temperatures on residents and workers.
Departments have been instructed to ensure access to clean drinking water and cooling arrangements at public facilities such as offices, schools, and community centers.
Additionally, sanitation workers and gardeners are being provided with oral rehydration supplies to prevent dehydration during outdoor duties. Contractors overseeing field work have also been directed to arrange shaded rest areas and drinking water at work sites.
Animal Welfare Measures Included
Special attention has also been given to animal care during extreme weather. Authorities have asked veterinary teams to ensure that water is available at designated feeding points for stray animals across the city.
These measures aim to address both human and animal needs as the region continues to experience fluctuating weather conditions.
As forecasts suggest more rain in the coming days, residents are advised to remain cautious, particularly during thunderstorms and periods of strong wind activity.
