Weather Alert – Heavy Rainfall Expected Across Several Tamil Nadu Districts
Weather Alert – Several parts of Tamil Nadu are likely to witness heavy showers over the next few days as changing weather conditions over the Bay of Bengal continue to influence rainfall activity across the state.

The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai has predicted intense rainfall in eight districts of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday following the formation of an atmospheric circulation system over nearby sea regions. Weather officials said the system stretches from the central-eastern Bay of Bengal towards the southeast Arabian Sea, passing through the southwest Bay of Bengal, the southern coastline of Tamil Nadu, the Gulf of Mannar and the sea areas close to Kanyakumari.
Heavy Showers Likely in Hill and Interior Districts
According to the latest forecast, isolated heavy rainfall is expected in the hill regions of Coimbatore and Tiruppur districts. Similar weather conditions are also likely in Nilgiris, Erode, Salem, Theni, Dindigul and Kanyakumari districts during the day.
Meteorologists explained that moisture movement from adjoining seas, combined with prevailing atmospheric instability, may trigger strong spells of rain in these areas. Authorities have advised residents living in vulnerable locations, especially hilly regions, to remain alert as heavy showers could disrupt transport services and routine public movement.
Rain Activity Expected to Continue Till May 29
The weather department stated that moderate rainfall may continue at isolated locations across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from Wednesday through May 29. Officials believe the existing circulation pattern over the sea will keep weather conditions favourable for rain across several districts.
While widespread flooding is not currently anticipated, localised waterlogging in low-lying regions cannot be ruled out if rainfall intensity increases. Disaster management teams and local administrations are reportedly monitoring the situation closely in districts expected to receive substantial rainfall.
Chennai Likely to Witness Cloudy Conditions
For Chennai and neighbouring suburban areas, the forecast indicates generally cloudy skies over the next 24 hours. Several parts of the city could receive moderate rain along with short-duration showers during the day and evening hours.
Despite the possibility of rainfall, temperatures in the capital city are expected to remain relatively high. Weather experts noted that humid conditions are likely to continue because of increased moisture levels in the atmosphere.
Humidity May Continue Despite Rainfall
Meteorologists said the combination of heat and moisture could make daytime weather uncomfortable in Chennai and other urban centres, even during intermittent rainfall periods. Residents may continue to experience warm conditions due to reduced wind movement and persistent humidity.
Experts added that while districts receiving sustained rain may experience temporary relief from high temperatures, coastal and densely populated urban regions could continue to face muggy weather conditions over the coming days.
Authorities Monitoring Weather Developments
Officials said weather conditions are being reviewed continuously, and additional advisories may be issued depending on the movement and intensity of the atmospheric system. Residents in rain-prone districts have been encouraged to follow official updates and exercise caution during periods of heavy rainfall.
The ongoing weather pattern is expected to play an important role in shaping rainfall distribution across Tamil Nadu this week, particularly in western and southern districts where rain activity is forecast to remain comparatively stronger.
