VoterList – West Bengal Roll Revision Removes Nearly 91 Lakh Names
VoterList – The Election Commission’s recent revision of electoral rolls in West Bengal has led to the removal of a substantial number of voter names, highlighting the scale and complexity of maintaining accurate voter data across the state.

The Election Commission has reported that close to 91 lakh entries have been deleted from West Bengal’s voter lists following a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. While the final updated number of registered voters is yet to be officially declared, the revision process has already brought significant changes to the state’s electoral database.
Initial Findings Show Sharp Reduction
Preliminary data released on February 28 indicated that around 63.66 lakh names had been removed since the revision began in November. This accounted for roughly 8.3 percent of the total electorate. As a result, the voter base dropped from approximately 7.66 crore to just over 7.04 crore during the early phase of the exercise.
A large portion of these deletions included more than 60 lakh entries categorized as “under adjudication,” meaning they required further verification before a final decision could be made.
Scrutiny Process Clarifies Disputed Entries
Following detailed examination by judicial authorities, a significant number of disputed names were reviewed. Over 27 lakh entries from the adjudication list were ultimately removed, while nearly 32.68 lakh names were found valid and reinstated in the updated rolls.
This multi-stage verification process contributed to the overall figure of approximately 90.83 lakh deletions recorded during the SIR exercise. Officials emphasized that the review was carried out carefully to ensure that genuine voters were not excluded without proper assessment.
Transparency Measures During Revision
The Election Commission stated that the entire revision process was conducted in a phased and transparent manner. District-level data was made publicly accessible to maintain accountability and allow scrutiny of the changes.
Out of more than 60 lakh adjudication cases, detailed information for about 59.84 lakh entries has already been released. A small number of cases—around 22,000—have been processed but are pending final procedural steps such as electronic verification. Minor adjustments in figures may still occur once these formalities are completed.
Electoral Rolls Finalized for First Phase
With the publication of the supplementary list, voter rolls for the first phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections have now been frozen in accordance with established guidelines. Out of the total 294 constituencies in the state, 152 seats are scheduled to go to polls on April 23. The remaining 142 constituencies will vote on April 29.
The voter list for the second phase will be finalized on April 9, ensuring that all administrative preparations remain on schedule ahead of polling.
No Further Changes Allowed at This Stage
Election authorities have clarified that no additional names will be added to the electoral rolls at this stage. Any further modifications will depend on legal provisions or directives from competent institutions.
The matter is also expected to be reviewed by the Supreme Court, which is scheduled to hear related issues on April 13. Any decision arising from that hearing could influence the final status of certain entries.
Significance of the Revision Exercise
The large-scale revision highlights the importance of maintaining accurate and updated voter databases, particularly in a state with a sizable electorate like West Bengal. Such exercises aim to remove duplicate, shifted, or ineligible entries while preserving the integrity of the democratic process.
Officials maintain that despite the scale of deletions, the process has followed due procedure and safeguards. The final electoral roll, once officially confirmed, will serve as the foundation for the upcoming Assembly elections.
