According to officials, many of these villages have already experienced rapid growth in population and construction activity. However, their administrative classification as rural areas has limited the scope of planned development and delayed infrastructure upgrades. By granting urban status, the civic body aims to remove these bottlenecks and streamline development work.

The decision has been taken under the provisions of the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, 1957. This legal backing ensures that the transition from rural to urban classification follows established guidelines and allows the MCD to extend its full range of services to these areas.

Standing Committee Chairperson Satya Sharma stated that the move is part of a broader effort to align governance structures with on-ground realities. She noted that several villages now display characteristics similar to urban neighborhoods, including dense housing, commercial activity, and increased demand for municipal services.

Recognizing Changing Ground Realities

Officials highlighted that the transformation of these villages has been ongoing for years. With the expansion of the city and rising land demand, many formerly rural pockets have seen significant construction, including residential colonies and small commercial hubs.

Sharma explained that acknowledging the urban nature of these villages is necessary for effective governance. She added that formal classification would make it easier to introduce systematic development projects and improve oversight.
