Transit – Central Line Services Disrupted After Coach Derails Near Dombivli
Transit – Several suburban train services on Mumbai’s Central Line faced delays on Monday morning after a coach from an empty train rake went off the tracks near Dombivli station. The incident occurred around 8:09 am while the rake was being moved from the Kalwa Car Shed toward Kalyan, according to officials from Central Railway.

Derailment During Non-Passenger Movement
Railway authorities confirmed that the affected train was not carrying passengers at the time of the incident. As a result, no injuries were reported. The derailment happened during a routine movement of an empty rake, which typically operates outside regular passenger service schedules. Despite the absence of commuters on board, the disruption had a noticeable impact on active train operations during peak morning hours.
Immediate Impact on Train Operations
Following the derailment, services on the Up line experienced delays of over 15 minutes. At least three local trains were held up as a result of the obstruction on the tracks. Commuters traveling during the morning rush reported longer waiting times and overcrowded platforms as schedules were affected.
Railway teams, including technical staff and emergency response units, were quickly deployed to the site. Restoration work began promptly to clear the tracks and resume normal operations. Officials stated that all necessary measures were being taken to minimize inconvenience to passengers and ensure safety.
Passenger Reports Highlight Delays
Commuters using travel apps and platforms shared updates about the disruption. According to passenger feedback, slow train services between Dombivli and Thakurli were particularly affected. While train movement gradually resumed, schedules remained irregular for some time after the incident.
Reports indicated that fast trains running from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) to Kalyan continued to operate close to schedule. However, slow services on the same route were delayed by approximately six minutes. In the reverse direction, from Kalyan toward CSMT, fast trains were running about nine minutes late, while slow trains experienced delays of nearly 16 minutes.
Efforts to Restore Normalcy
Railway officials worked to remove the derailed coach and inspect the affected section of the track. Safety checks were conducted to ensure that subsequent train movements would not be compromised. By late morning, services had largely resumed, although minor delays persisted as operations gradually stabilized.
Authorities emphasized that such incidents, though rare, are handled with priority to prevent prolonged disruption. Maintenance and monitoring systems are in place to reduce risks during train movements, including non-passenger operations like rake transfers.
Commuter Advisory and Ongoing Monitoring
Passengers were advised to check live train updates before planning their journeys, especially during peak hours. Railway officials continue to monitor the situation and adjust schedules as needed to bring services fully back on track.
While the derailment did not result in injuries, it once again highlighted the sensitivity of suburban rail networks to even minor operational disruptions. With millions relying on daily train services, swift response and clear communication remain crucial in managing such incidents effectively.
