Traffic – Commuters travelling on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway faced severe delays on Friday, May 1, as traffic came to a standstill for nearly five hours under intense heat. The disruption coincided with Maharashtra Day and Labour Day, when traffic volumes typically rise due to holiday travel toward Konkan, Pune, and Goa. The situation worsened after multiple vehicles reportedly broke down in long queues, leading to further congestion along the busy corridor.
Heavy holiday traffic worsens situation
The expressway witnessed an unusual surge in vehicles as people set out for long weekend trips. The added pressure on the highway, combined with ongoing arrangements for a major infrastructure inauguration, created bottlenecks at several points. Many motorists reported that their vehicles overheated while stuck in traffic for extended periods, especially during peak afternoon heat.
Authorities indicated that the combination of holiday traffic and operational disruptions contributed to the gridlock. The congestion stretched across several kilometers, leaving commuters stranded with limited movement for hours.
Political leaders also affected by traffic delays
Among those caught in the traffic was Supriya Sule, a senior leader and Member of Parliament from Baramati. She shared visuals on social media showing a long line of vehicles both ahead of and behind her, highlighting the scale of the disruption. According to her account, she was stuck for nearly two hours earlier in the day before the official event began.
The incident also drew criticism from opposition leaders. A spokesperson from the Shiv Sena (UBT) pointed out that while senior officials traveled by air to attend the inauguration, ordinary citizens were left dealing with prolonged delays on the road.
Chief Minister acknowledges inconvenience
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis addressed the situation during a press briefing held at the inauguration venue. He expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to commuters and acknowledged that the event contributed to traffic congestion.
He specifically mentioned that travellers heading between Mumbai and Pune had to endure significant delays and extended an apology to those affected. Referring to Supriya Sule’s experience, he assured that such disruptions would not recur once the newly inaugurated infrastructure becomes fully functional.
New link expected to ease future congestion
The inauguration marked the opening of a 13.3-kilometre stretch known as the “Missing Link,” a project designed to improve connectivity on the expressway. The new route connects Khopoli in Raigad district with Kusgaon near Lonavala in Pune district, bypassing the steep and accident-prone ghat section.
Officials stated that the project aims to streamline traffic flow along the 94-kilometre expressway, making it fully access-controlled. By diverting vehicles away from the older, winding section, authorities expect a reduction in travel time as well as fewer accidents.
Infrastructure project includes advanced engineering features
Developed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation, the project incorporates several complex engineering elements. These include two tunnels, two viaducts, and a cable-stayed bridge designed to navigate the challenging terrain of the Western Ghats.
Transport officials believe that once fully operational, the new link will significantly improve the driving experience on one of India’s busiest highways. The project is also expected to support smoother movement of goods and passenger traffic between Mumbai and Pune, two major economic hubs.
Political undertones emerge amid development claims
The inauguration also carried political significance, with the Chief Minister noting that the project had remained incomplete during the previous administration. He stated that the current government ensured its completion, positioning it as a key achievement in infrastructure development.
Meanwhile, opposition leaders emphasized the immediate inconvenience faced by commuters, arguing that better planning could have minimized disruptions during the event.
Despite the temporary chaos, officials remain confident that the new link will provide long-term relief to travellers and enhance overall efficiency on the Mumbai-Pune route.
