Tourism – The hill shrine at Tirumala experienced an exceptional surge of devotees over the weekend, as tens of thousands gathered for darshan, creating one of the busiest periods of the season.
Heavy Weekend Footfall Tests Temple Arrangements
Officials reported that more than 92,000 pilgrims visited the temple on Saturday alone, placing significant pressure on the existing arrangements. The continuous flow of devotees extended late into the night, with darshan services running until around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday. After a brief pause, the routine resumed early with the traditional morning rituals at 2:30 a.m.
The influx did not slow down the following day. By Sunday evening, approximately 56,000 more visitors had completed darshan. Authorities indicated that such numbers are among the highest recorded in recent weeks, reflecting a sharp rise in pilgrimage activity during the summer period.
Holiday Season Drives Pilgrim Numbers Higher
Temple authorities attributed the surge largely to ongoing school and college holidays, which have encouraged families to undertake religious visits. On Saturday alone, around 150,000 pilgrims were estimated to be staying in Tirumala, adding to the congestion across accommodation facilities and queue systems.
Officials overseeing crowd management noted that handling such a large gathering required constant coordination. Despite the strain, efforts were made to maintain orderly movement within the Vaikuntam Queue Complex and surrounding areas.
Weather Disruptions Briefly Affect Movement
Unexpected rainfall in Tirupati and Tirumala created temporary disruptions, slowing down both pedestrian and vehicular traffic for a short period. However, the situation improved by Sunday morning as conditions stabilized and the flow of devotees returned to normal levels.
Authorities confirmed that despite these interruptions, no major incidents were reported, and pilgrims were able to proceed with their visits safely.
Infrastructure Upgrades to Handle Summer Rush
Anticipating increased footfall during the holiday season, the temple administration implemented several measures to ease the burden on visitors. An investment of around Rs 2 crore has been made to enhance facilities and improve comfort for waiting devotees.
Temporary shaded shelters have been installed along key routes, including the stretch from Batagangamma Circle to Gogarbham Dam Circle. Additional shelters have also been set up in high-density areas such as the Vaikuntam Queue Complex-2, museum premises, and Narayanagiri Gardens.
To counter rising temperatures, cooling paint has been applied along queue lines and the four Mada Streets. Authorities also arranged temporary sanitation facilities at major waiting points to improve hygiene conditions.
Water, Medical Aid, and Food Supply Strengthened
Ensuring access to drinking water has been a priority, with mobile water units deployed across the temple area. Volunteers have been stationed at multiple points to distribute water and assist devotees.
Healthcare services have also been expanded, with 16 medical centres operating alongside a mobile first-aid unit to address emergencies. Officials confirmed that medical teams are on standby throughout the day to provide immediate assistance if required.
To meet the growing demand for prasadam, the temple has increased the production and storage of laddus. A reserve stock of 350,000 laddus has been maintained in addition to the daily preparation of an equal number.
Accommodation and Other Services Under Pressure
Accommodation continues to remain limited due to the heavy influx of visitors. Authorities have introduced measures to manage the situation by directing pilgrims to locker facilities for secure storage of belongings. Nearly 9,000 lockers have been made available across designated complexes.
Rooms are being allocated primarily to families to ensure fair distribution of space. In addition, tonsure services have been expanded significantly, with more than 1,100 barbers, including a large number of women staff, attending to devotees.
Despite the challenges posed by record crowds, officials stated that coordinated efforts helped maintain order and ensure that pilgrims could complete their visits with minimal disruption.
