Tourism – Delhi Yamuna Cruise Launch Delayed As Work Continues
Tourism – The much-anticipated river cruise project on the Yamuna in Delhi is facing delays as essential infrastructure work remains incomplete.
The plan to introduce a cruise service on the Yamuna River, aimed at boosting tourism in the capital, has not yet met its expected launch timeline. Initially projected to begin operations by February, the initiative is now likely to take a few more months as several critical facilities are still under construction.
Key Infrastructure Yet to Be Completed
A recent site visit revealed that while construction is progressing steadily, several important components required for public use are not fully ready. These include ticket booking counters, charging stations, waiting lounges, parking areas, drinking water points, and public sanitation facilities. Recreational features such as children’s play areas are also still in development.
Despite the delays, workers at the site confirmed that efforts are ongoing at a consistent pace. Many laborers were seen actively engaged in completing the remaining tasks. According to staff members present at the location, the project has been under continuous development since its announcement, and there is optimism that the remaining work could be wrapped up within the next two to three months.
Floating Jetty Ready, Vessel Awaiting Deployment
One of the major components of the project—the floating jetty—has already been completed. This structure is expected to serve as a key boarding and docking point for passengers once operations begin.
Meanwhile, the cruise vessel itself has already been transported from Mumbai to Delhi. For now, it remains covered with protective sheets to prevent dust accumulation and maintain cleanliness. Officials on-site explained that this precaution is necessary until all supporting infrastructure is fully ready. Once the remaining facilities are completed, the vessel will be positioned appropriately for operations.
Route and Project Scope
The cruise service is planned to operate along a stretch of approximately six to seven kilometres on the Yamuna, connecting Sonia Vihar to Jagatpur. This segment lies upstream of the Wazirabad barrage and has been selected for its relatively cleaner and calmer waters.
The project is part of a broader riverfront development strategy aimed at promoting eco-friendly tourism and recreational activities in Delhi. With an estimated investment of around ₹20 crore, authorities envision the cruise as a sustainable leisure option that aligns with environmental and safety standards.
Focus on Safety and Tourism Growth
Officials have previously stated that the cruise service will follow international safety norms. The initiative is also expected to enhance the city’s tourism profile by offering residents and visitors a new way to experience the Yamuna.
However, until the final touches on infrastructure and connectivity are completed, the public will need to wait a little longer. Authorities have not announced a revised launch date, but indications from ground staff suggest that the service could become operational within a few months if current progress continues.
