Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson will table the maiden budget of the Vijay-led administration on Wednesday. The Agriculture Budget is also scheduled to be introduced on August 6, offering additional details on the state’s plans for the farming sector.

Reports suggest the government may consider increasing the monthly financial assistance provided to eligible women beneficiaries. Arrest of Opposition leader sparks political debate

The political environment has remained tense following the case registered against Udhayanidhi Stalin. Police questioned the DMK leader over comments allegedly made during a public event, after which the Madras High Court directed that he be released upon completion of the inquiry.

After regaining his freedom, Udhayanidhi criticized the government’s actions, alleging that the legal proceedings were intended to divert public attention from pressing governance issues, including concerns raised by farmers. He also accused the ruling party of attempting to shift the political narrative through allegations against him.

DMK alleges attempt to disrupt Assembly participation

Senior DMK leader and advocate N.R. Elango argued that the timing of the police action was significant because it came just before the commencement of the Assembly’s budget session. According to him, the move was designed to prevent Udhayanidhi Stalin from participating in legislative discussions and questioning the government during the crucial financial session.

The ruling administration has not publicly accepted these allegations, while political observers expect the issue to feature prominently during Assembly debates.

Remarks during public meeting triggered controversy

The controversy originated from a public gathering held during a protest related to the Cauvery water issue. During his speech, members of the audience repeatedly chanted the name of actor Trisha. Udhayanidhi allegedly made a remark that some interpreted as carrying a double meaning before clarifying that he was referring to the flow of Cauvery water.

Following the incident, the women’s wing of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam filed a complaint with the Thanjavur Police, claiming that the statement was objectionable and directed at the actor. The complaint led to the registration of a case and subsequent police action, turning the issue into a major political flashpoint ahead of the state’s first budget session under the new government.
