The 22nd Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships will take place over seven days, from July 27 to August 2, at the Thyagaraj Stadium in Delhi. More than 25 Commonwealth nations are expected to participate, with elite players competing for top honours in one of the sport’s most significant international events. The championship will conclude with the finals on August 2.

Countries expected to send their teams include England, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Singapore, Scotland, Wales, South Africa, Malaysia, Malta, Botswana, Jamaica, Kenya, Trinidad and Tobago, along with several other Commonwealth members. The tournament is expected to provide spectators with high-quality competition while strengthening sporting ties among participating nations.

Mascot Reflects India’s Cultural Identity

Speaking during the launch event, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta explained that the mascot, named “Mayur”, draws inspiration from India’s national bird, the peacock. She said the design represents qualities such as enthusiasm, energy, optimism and vibrancy, which are closely associated with competitive sports.

According to the Chief Minister, the peacock’s feathers have been creatively designed to feature the national flags of every participating country. She noted that this artistic concept reflects the idea of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, highlighting the belief that the world is one family while reinforcing the values of friendship, unity and fair play that international sporting competitions promote.

Delhi Showcases Readiness for Major Global Events

The Chief Minister said the upcoming championship demonstrates Delhi’s capability to organise international sporting competitions with modern infrastructure and efficient planning. She added that the national capital has consistently delivered successful large-scale sporting events in the past, including the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games.

She also described the tournament as an opportunity to further strengthen Delhi’s position as an important destination for international sports while encouraging greater public interest in table tennis and other competitive disciplines.

Indian Players Aim for Strong Performance

Expressing confidence in the Indian squad, Rekha Gupta said the home team is expected to be among the strongest contenders in the championship. She observed that competing against some of the world’s leading table tennis players would offer valuable international exposure to Indian athletes and help them improve their competitive standards.

She further said that hosting such a prestigious tournament could motivate young sportspersons across the country to pursue excellence in table tennis and other disciplines by giving them an opportunity to witness world-class competition on home soil.

Government Highlights Long-Term Vision for Sports

Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood also addressed the gathering and thanked the Chief Minister for supporting the event. He said the unveiling of the mascot represented more than the launch of a tournament symbol and reflected the government’s broader commitment to strengthening the future of sports in the national capital.

He added that the championship is expected to encourage greater participation in sports, inspire aspiring athletes and reinforce Delhi’s ambitions of becoming a leading centre for international sporting events in the years ahead.
