Founder of Bharatiya Jana Sangh

Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh on October 21, 1951. The organisation is regarded as the ideological predecessor of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Born on July 6, 1901, in Calcutta, Dr Mookerjee was known as an educationist, parliamentarian, statesman and humanitarian. He came from a family with a strong academic and public service background. His father, Sir Ashutosh Mookerjee, served as Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University and was also a judge of the Calcutta High Court.

Dr Mookerjee became the acting president of the Hindu Mahasabha in 1940 and supported complete independence for India. He later served as Minister for Industry and Supply in Jawaharlal Nehru’s Interim Government before resigning from the post.

He later established the Bharatiya Jana Sangh and emerged as a major political voice on issues related to national unity. Dr Mookerjee died in Kashmir in 1953. The BJP observes June 23 each year as Balidan Diwas in his memory.
