Syama Prasad Mookerjee – Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid tribute to Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his 125th birth anniversary, recalling his role in shaping public life and his long-standing commitment to India’s unity, integrity and national progress. The Prime Minister said Mookerjee’s work across education, industry and politics continues to hold relevance in the country’s development journey.
Modi Recalls Mookerjee’s Role in Nation-Building
In a message shared on X, Modi described Dr Mookerjee as a distinguished nation-builder whose life reflected academic excellence, personal courage and dedication to public service. He said Mookerjee worked consistently for India’s dignity, unity and advancement during a period of major political and social change.
The Prime Minister noted that Mookerjee’s contribution extended beyond electoral politics. He described him as a thinker and educationist who encouraged modern learning and innovation. Modi also said Mookerjee’s approach to education was shaped by the need to prepare India for future challenges while preserving the strength of its traditional institutions.
Contributions to Industry and Social Welfare Highlighted
Modi referred to Mookerjee’s tenure as Industries Minister, saying he helped establish an early foundation for industrial self-reliance. According to the Prime Minister, Mookerjee supported the expansion of domestic manufacturing while recognising the importance of traditional occupations and livelihoods.
The Prime Minister also recalled Mookerjee’s humanitarian work during the Bengal Famine. He said Mookerjee showed deep concern for people facing hardship and played an active role in relief efforts during the crisis. The tribute came on the birth anniversary of Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee, who was born in 1901 and died in 1953. His political career and public positions remain closely associated with debates around national integration and India’s constitutional framework.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also remembered Mookerjee, calling him a strong supporter of national unity, cultural nationalism and the principle of putting the country first. Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee was a barrister, educationist and political leader who founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, regarded as the predecessor to the Bharatiya Janata Party. He is remembered for his views on national unity and his involvement in public affairs during the early decades after Independence.
His 125th birth anniversary was marked by tributes from senior leaders, who reflected on his contribution to education, industry, social welfare and political thought.
