India auto retail records strongest june sales

Vehicle demand strengthens across key segments –

Passenger vehicle sales delivered one of the strongest performances during the month. Retail volumes rose to 410,853 units, up 28.63 percent year-on-year and 2.05 percent from the previous month, making it the best June recorded for the segment.

Demand outside major cities continued to provide important support. Passenger vehicle retail growth in rural markets stood at 35.09 percent, compared with 24.67 percent in urban areas. The figures underline the continued contribution of smaller towns and rural regions to India’s automobile market.

Alternative-fuel vehicles gain further ground –

The share of passenger vehicles powered by CNG, hybrid systems and electric technology crossed 40 percent for the first time, according to FADA. These powertrains together accounted for 40.35 percent of passenger vehicle retail sales in June.

Electric passenger vehicle retail sales reached an all-time high of 31,823 units. FADA President CS Vigneshwar said the rising share of alternative-fuel vehicles reflects a wider shift in buyer preferences as consumers look at fuel efficiency, lower running costs and new technology options.

Two-wheeler sales remain at record June levels –

Two-wheeler retail sales stood at 1,828,458 units, rising 21.22 percent from the same month last year. Although volumes slipped 0.89 percent compared with May, the segment still recorded its highest-ever June performance.

Dealers cited healthy demand for entry-level motorcycles and scooters, along with improved supply from manufacturers. Supply conditions were helped by the easing of disruptions following the West Asia ceasefire, which supported the movement of components and vehicle inventories.

Electric two-wheelers also expanded their presence in the market. Their share of total two-wheeler retail sales climbed to 10.60 percent, crossing the 10 percent mark for the first time. In June last year, electric models accounted for 7.34 percent of the segment.

Commercial vehicles and tractors post solid gains –

Commercial vehicle retail sales rose 16.88 percent year-on-year to 90,972 units, setting another June record. Rural demand was particularly strong, with sales in those markets increasing 21.63 percent over the previous year.

Three-wheeler retail sales reached 120,889 units, up 16.20 percent year-on-year. Electric models made up 64.08 percent of three-wheeler sales, highlighting the rapid adoption of battery-powered vehicles in the segment.

Tractor retail sales also showed a sharp improvement. Dealers sold 100,818 tractors in June, up 25.31 percent from a year earlier and 21.33 percent from May. The rise was linked to preparations for the Kharif crop season and expectations of improved agricultural activity.

Dealers expect stable demand in coming months –

FADA said dealer confidence remains positive for the coming period. About 51.24 percent of dealers expect business to grow, while 41.79 percent believe the market will remain broadly stable. Only 6.97 percent expect sales to decline.

Vigneshwar said the outlook will depend on the monsoon recovering from its shortfall, faster progress in Kharif sowing and the continuation of normal supply conditions. Lower crude oil prices and improved regional stability are also expected to support the automobile sector in the months ahead.
