Security – Kashmir Tightens Protection After Twin Terror Attacks on Workers and Policeman
Security – Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir have significantly strengthened security arrangements following two separate terror attacks that claimed the lives of a police personnel and two migrant labourers within a short span. Additional protection has been deployed in locations where migrant workers and Kashmiri Pandit families reside, while security has also been reinforced to ensure the smooth continuation of the ongoing Amarnath Yatra.
Massive Search Operation Underway
Security officials said an extensive search operation is in progress to locate those responsible for the July 22 shooting of a policeman in the busy Lal Chowk area of Anantnag and the recent attack at a brick kiln in Kulgam district, where two labourers from Chhattisgarh lost their lives. Multiple teams from the police, Army, and other security agencies have been engaged in coordinated operations across several nearby areas.
According to officials, security personnel immediately sealed the area surrounding the brick kiln after the attack and began systematic searches in neighbouring villages and localities. Investigators believe the swift response is aimed at preventing the attackers from escaping the region.
Investigation Points to Two Attackers
Preliminary findings indicate that two terrorists were involved in the Kulgam incident. Officials said one attacker allegedly opened fire on the labourers while the other provided cover before both escaped from the scene.
As part of the investigation, security agencies have detained several suspects for questioning. Officials are examining whether any over-ground workers may have assisted the attackers by providing logistical support, shelter, or movement assistance before or after the incident.
Lashkar-Linked Terrorist Under Scanner
Investigators have identified the name of Latief Bhat, a local terrorist believed to be associated with Lashkar-e-Taiba, during the probe into both attacks. Officials said his role is being examined as the investigation progresses.
Latief had previously escaped during a prolonged anti-terror operation conducted by security forces in Shopian earlier this month. During that encounter, another local terrorist, Zakir Ahmed, was killed after a five-day operation, while Latief reportedly managed to evade capture.
Surveillance and Patrolling Intensified
Following the recent incidents, security agencies have expanded surveillance across several districts. Police, Army, and paramilitary personnel have increased patrols on major roads and in sensitive areas. Additional checkpoints have been established where vehicles are being inspected and commuters are undergoing security checks.
Officials said the enhanced deployment is intended to reassure residents while improving the ability of security forces to respond quickly to any suspicious activity.
Protection Enhanced for Vulnerable Communities
Security officials confirmed that extra personnel have been deployed in neighbourhoods where migrant labourers and migrant Kashmiri Pandit families are staying. The objective is to strengthen security coverage in vulnerable locations and reduce the risk of further attacks.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha chaired a high-level security review meeting following the incidents. During the meeting, he directed officials to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the existing standard operating procedures designed for the protection of migrant workers and to implement improvements wherever necessary.
Amarnath Yatra Security Strengthened
Authorities have also reviewed security arrangements for the ongoing Amarnath Yatra. Officials stated that additional preventive measures have been introduced along the pilgrimage routes and at key transit points to ensure the safety of pilgrims throughout the annual religious journey.
Security agencies said they remain on high alert and will continue coordinated operations to identify those responsible for the attacks while maintaining heightened vigilance across the Kashmir Valley.
