Education – Delhi University Legacy Highlighted as Sandhu Inspires Kirori Mal Students

Education -Lieutenant-Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu encouraged students at Kirori Mal College to believe in their abilities and make the most of the opportunities offered by India’s education system, while reflecting on his own academic journey at the University of Delhi.

During the orientation programme held at Kirori Mal College, Sandhu shared a personal account of his student life, telling the gathering that he completed both his undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Delhi and never pursued education overseas. He said the knowledge and values he gained at Delhi University became the foundation of his professional career, enabling him to represent and serve India in various international assignments. Stressing the importance of confidence and determination, he urged students to trust India’s institutions and recognise their own potential as they prepare for the future.

Kirori Mal College’s Long Academic Legacy

Highlighting the institution’s contribution to higher education, Sandhu described Kirori Mal College as one of the University of Delhi’s most respected colleges for more than 70 years. He noted that its standing has been built through decades of academic excellence and by producing graduates who have made meaningful contributions across several fields.

According to the Lieutenant-Governor, the college has nurtured distinguished leaders, scientists, scholars, civil servants, entrepreneurs, artists and professionals whose work has contributed to the country’s development. He remarked that the true strength of an educational institution is measured not only by its infrastructure or rankings but also by the quality of citizens it prepares for society.

Research Achievements Receive Recognition

The event also celebrated academic accomplishments under the university’s four-year undergraduate programme. Sandhu congratulated students and faculty mentors whose research papers were published, describing the achievement as a positive sign of a vibrant academic environment where research and critical thinking begin at an early stage of higher education.

He said encouraging students to participate in research while pursuing their undergraduate studies helps strengthen academic culture and prepares them for future challenges in education, industry and public service.

Incubation Centre Launched to Promote Innovation

As part of the programme, the Lieutenant-Governor inaugurated the Kirori Mal College Incubation Centre, an initiative aimed at encouraging entrepreneurship and innovation among students. Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for India’s education sector, Sandhu said university campuses are increasingly becoming hubs of creativity, technological advancement and startup-driven ideas led by the country’s youth.

He observed that educational institutions have an important role in creating an ecosystem where innovative thinking can develop into practical solutions with social and economic impact. The incubation centre, he said, would provide students with opportunities to transform ideas into meaningful ventures.

Universities Seen as Key to India’s Future Goals

Concluding his address, Sandhu said universities will play a central role in India’s long-term development ambitions as the country works towards the goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047. He emphasised that higher education institutions must continue strengthening research, innovation and entrepreneurship while preparing students to contribute responsibly to national growth.

He encouraged the new batch of students to embrace learning with confidence, make full use of academic opportunities and participate actively in research and innovation. According to him, the future of the country will be shaped by young minds equipped with knowledge, integrity and the willingness to create positive change.
