Security – Gunfight Continues Between Maoists and Forces in Saranda Forest

Security – A fresh exchange of gunfire broke out early Wednesday in Jharkhand’s Saranda region after security personnel came face to face with a group of Maoist insurgents during an ongoing operation. According to initial reports, the encounter began when the armed rebels opened fire upon spotting the approaching forces, prompting an immediate and coordinated response from the security teams.

Operation Underway in Dense Forest Area

The incident is taking place in the Babudera forest area, which falls under the Chhota Nagra police station limits in West Singhbhum district. Security officials confirmed that the operation was part of a planned search mission involving a joint team of CRPF’s COBRA unit, Jharkhand Jaguar, and the local district police.

Sources indicated that the Maoist group was in the process of relocating their base within the forest when they encountered the advancing forces. As soon as they realized the presence of the security personnel, they initiated firing in an attempt to evade capture.

Reports of Injuries and Possible Casualties

Police sources have stated that several Maoists are believed to have sustained bullet injuries during the ongoing exchange. While there are unconfirmed indications that some insurgents may have been killed, officials have not yet recovered any bodies from the site.

The encounter is reportedly continuing intermittently, with both sides exchanging fire in phases. Security personnel are proceeding cautiously due to the challenging terrain and the possibility of hidden threats in the area.

Presence of Senior Maoist Leader Suspected

Authorities have linked the group involved in the encounter to a squad reportedly led by Misir Besra, a senior Maoist leader who has been on the wanted list for several years. His presence in the region has been a key concern for security agencies, leading to intensified operations in recent months.

Officials believe that Besra and his associates have been using the dense forest cover of Saranda to avoid detection while continuing their activities in the region.

Use of Mobile Camps and Defensive Measures

Security agencies have observed a shift in Maoist tactics in recent times. Instead of operating from fixed locations, small groups are now moving between temporary camps to reduce the risk of being tracked. This mobility has made it more difficult for forces to locate and neutralize them.

Additionally, intelligence inputs suggest that Maoists have laid a network of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and spike traps around their hideouts to delay or deter the movement of security forces.

Forces Advancing Despite Challenges

Despite these obstacles, officials have emphasized that the forces are advancing with caution and determination. Temporary camps have been established in strategic locations within the forest to strengthen operational control and maintain pressure on the insurgent groups.

The Chaibasa Superintendent of Police has indicated that even though the area is heavily mined with explosives, the operation is progressing steadily with a focus on minimizing risks to personnel while ensuring effective action.

Long-Term Operation in Kolhan Region

The current encounter is part of a broader and sustained campaign launched in November 2022 across the Kolhan forest belt. This operation was initiated following intelligence reports about the presence of top Maoist leaders, including Misir Besra, in the region.

The Saranda forest, known for its difficult terrain and dense vegetation, has long been considered a strategic stronghold for Maoist groups. Security forces have since been working to dismantle their networks and restore normalcy in the area.

As the operation continues, officials remain cautious but confident, with further updates expected once the situation on the ground becomes clearer.
