Riverfront – Tawi Riverfront Phase One Opened to Public in Jammu
Riverfront – The first phase of the Tawi Riverfront Project was officially opened to the public in Jammu on the occasion of Baisakhi, marking a significant step in the city’s urban transformation. The project, completed at a cost of ₹156 crore, was inaugurated by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, who described it as a major effort to create inclusive and accessible public spaces for residents.
Modern Infrastructure Along Both Riverbanks
The initial phase of the project focuses on developing key areas along the Tawi river. Jammu Smart City Limited has constructed well-designed promenades on both the left and right banks, along with the central island. These stretches together form four continuous pathways, making the area suitable for walking, jogging, and cycling.
In addition to recreational facilities, a dedicated ghat has been built to host the traditional Tawi Aarti. This feature aims to preserve cultural practices while integrating them into the city’s evolving infrastructure.
Vision of Balanced Urban Growth
Speaking at the inauguration, the Lieutenant Governor highlighted the importance of blending development with environmental and cultural values. He noted that the riverfront project reflects a vision where modern infrastructure coexists with natural surroundings and traditional practices.
The inauguration coincided with the three-day Tawi Mahotsav, an event organized to celebrate local culture and community engagement. During the festival, citizens participated in the Tawi Aarti alongside officials, reinforcing the cultural significance of the river.
New Road and Connectivity Plans Announced
Alongside the inauguration, plans for further infrastructure development were also announced. A foundation stone was laid for a four-lane road connecting the right bank of the river. This road will include a bridge designed to ease traffic congestion in one of the city’s busiest stretches.
The proposed route will directly link Bhagwati Nagar rotary with Jewel Chowk, improving connectivity and reducing travel time for commuters.
Expansion of Green Spaces and Public Areas
Another key initiative launched during the event was the development of green spaces along the top promenade of the left bank. This one-kilometre stretch is expected to enhance the overall appeal of the riverfront, providing residents and visitors with a well-maintained urban leisure area.
Officials stated that such developments are aimed at making the riverfront a vibrant destination for both locals and tourists.
Future Plans Under Urban Challenge Fund
Authorities also outlined future plans under the Urban Challenge Fund. Two major proposals are currently under consideration: monetisation of the first phase of the project and expansion of the riverfront from Bikram Chowk Bridge to Har Ki Paudi.
These steps are expected to further strengthen the riverfront’s role as a recreational hub while also contributing to economic activity in the region.
Cultural Significance Highlighted
During his address, the Lieutenant Governor spoke about Jammu’s long-standing cultural and spiritual heritage. He described the city as a historic centre that has attracted saints, scholars, and artists for generations.
He also emphasized that preserving cultural values is essential for sustaining the identity of such cities. According to him, development should not only focus on infrastructure but also ensure that traditions are carried forward to future generations.
Community Participation and Events
The event also included community-focused activities. Citizens were administered an anti-drug pledge as part of a broader awareness initiative. Winners of traditional wrestling competitions held during the festival were also honoured.
Several public representatives, senior officials, religious leaders, and citizens from different backgrounds attended the Tawi Mahotsav, reflecting strong community participation in the event.
The project is seen as a key milestone in Jammu’s urban development journey, with officials expressing confidence that it will enhance both the city’s infrastructure and its cultural landscape.
