RajyaSabhaElection – Congress, JMM Finalise Strategy Ahead of Crucial Jharkhand Poll
RajyaSabhaElection – Political activity intensified in Jharkhand on Wednesday as members of the ruling INDIA alliance prepared for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections scheduled for June 18. With two seats at stake, alliance leaders held discussions and organisational meetings to ensure smooth coordination ahead of voting in the state assembly.

Alliance Leaders Meet to Shape Election Plan
According to senior leaders, legislators belonging to the INDIA bloc were scheduled to gather at the Chief Minister’s residence in Ranchi to review preparations and finalise their strategy. The meeting was aimed at ensuring that all alliance partners remain aligned during the voting process for the two Upper House seats.
Congress MLA Pradip Yadav said discussions among coalition members would focus on voting arrangements and coordination among legislators. The alliance currently enjoys a significant numerical advantage in the state assembly and remains confident about its prospects in the election.
Speculation Over Congress Legislators’ Stay
Reports emerged that Congress legislators could be accommodated at a hotel in Ranchi ahead of polling day, a move similar to one already adopted by the NDA. However, Congress leaders dismissed suggestions that any formal relocation plan had been approved.
Party media in-charge Rakesh Sinha clarified that legislators were not being shifted to a hotel as a precautionary measure. He stated that some lawmakers may visit the venue where All India Congress Committee observers are staying, but maintained that the party had sufficient support and expected the election process to proceed without complications.
Numbers Continue to Favor the INDIA Bloc
For a candidate to secure victory in the Rajya Sabha election, at least 28 first-preference votes are required. In the 81-member Jharkhand Assembly, the INDIA alliance currently commands 56 legislators, while the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance has the support of 24 members.
The contest features three candidates. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha has fielded Baidyanath Ram, while the Congress has nominated Pranav Jha. The BJP is backing Independent candidate Parimal Nathwani.
Given the current strength of both camps, political observers expect a closely monitored voting process despite the ruling alliance’s numerical edge.
Mock Voting Conducted Ahead of Poll Day
To familiarise legislators with voting procedures, the ruling alliance organised a mock polling exercise before the election. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Radhakrishna Kishore said the practice session helped lawmakers understand the voting mechanism and avoid procedural errors during the actual election.
During the mock exercise, Baidyanath Ram reportedly received 29 votes, while Congress nominee Pranav Jha secured 27. Alliance leaders described the exercise as a routine preparatory step designed to ensure smooth participation in the election.
Meanwhile, NDA legislators had already been moved to a hotel on Tuesday as part of their own election management efforts.
Composition of Both Political Camps
The NDA’s strength in the assembly comes from 21 BJP legislators along with representatives from the AJSU Party, JD(U), LJP (Ram Vilas), and the Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha.
On the other hand, the INDIA alliance consists of 34 MLAs from the JMM, 16 from Congress, four from the RJD, and two members from CPI(ML) Liberation. This combined strength places the alliance in a favourable position heading into the election.
Two Vacancies Triggered Rajya Sabha Contest
The current Rajya Sabha election was necessitated by two vacancies from Jharkhand. One seat became vacant following the death of veteran JMM leader and party founder Shibu Soren. The second seat fell vacant after BJP representative Deepak Prakash completed his term in the Upper House of Parliament.
