The announcement was made on Friday by Rekha Gupta, who confirmed that Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has cleared the proposal for operating a new Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) passenger train between Delhi and Faridabad.

New Rail Service Expected to Support Daily Passengers

According to officials, the newly approved MEMU train service has been introduced to strengthen connectivity for office workers, students, and other regular travellers moving between the national capital and neighbouring Faridabad. The corridor witnesses heavy passenger movement every day, especially during peak working hours.

Government representatives said residents from Faridabad and nearby regions had repeatedly raised concerns over overcrowded public transport and increasing delays on existing travel options. The additional rail service is expected to provide a more dependable and quicker mode of transport for short and medium-distance commuters.

Understanding the MEMU Train System

Railway authorities explained that MEMU trains are specially designed electric passenger services used for suburban and regional travel on major railway lines. Unlike conventional trains, these units do not depend on a separate engine at the front.

Instead, the train coaches themselves are equipped with distributed power systems, allowing smoother acceleration and efficient operations over shorter routes. This design also helps in reducing stoppage time and improving overall travel efficiency for passengers.

Officials added that MEMU services are commonly preferred for routes with frequent stops because of their operational flexibility and faster turnaround capability.

Delhi Government Welcomes Railway Ministry Decision

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta welcomed the approval and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with the Railway Ministry for supporting the project.

She stated that the new train service is likely to bring significant convenience to people travelling daily for employment, education, and business activities. The initiative is also expected to improve accessibility for residents living in adjoining urban areas connected to Faridabad.

According to the statement, better rail connectivity has been a long-standing public demand in the region due to rising traffic pressure and the growing population of daily commuters.

Expected Impact on Road Traffic and Public Transport

Transport experts believe the additional MEMU service could help reduce pressure on roads connecting Delhi and Faridabad, where traffic congestion remains a persistent challenge during morning and evening hours.

By shifting a section of daily travellers from road-based transport to rail networks, authorities expect smoother movement across key commuter routes. Improved railway frequency may also help reduce crowding on existing passenger services operating in the region.

Officials have not yet announced the detailed timetable or commencement date for the service. However, railway authorities are expected to release operational details after the necessary scheduling and route planning processes are completed.

The approval comes amid continued efforts by Indian Railways to strengthen suburban and regional transport infrastructure in rapidly expanding urban clusters across the country.
