IranFuneral – Iran has formally extended an invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to participate in the state funeral and burial ceremonies of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, according to sources familiar with the matter. The invitation highlights the importance Tehran places on international participation as it prepares for one of the largest public events in the country’s recent history.
Funeral Ceremonies Scheduled Across Multiple Cities
Iranian authorities have announced that the official mourning and funeral proceedings will begin on July 4. The ceremonies are expected to take place over several days and include events in key religious and political centers of the country.
State media reports indicate that commemorative gatherings will be held in the holy city of Qom on July 7. The final phase of the ceremonies is scheduled for July 9, when Khamenei will be laid to rest in Mashhad, his birthplace and one of Iran’s most significant religious destinations.
The former leader, who guided the Islamic Republic for more than three decades, died at the age of 86 during a military strike carried out jointly by the United States and Israel on February 28. Following the death of Ali Khamenei, leadership responsibilities were transferred to his son, Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei, who assumed the position of Supreme Leader on March 8.
Despite the transition, questions regarding Mojtaba Khamenei’s health and current whereabouts have continued to generate international discussion. Several prominent American officials, including Marco Rubio and Pete Hegseth, have publicly commented on reports concerning his medical condition, although official clarification from Iranian authorities has remained limited.
