Politics – TDP Signals Expanding Influence With First-Ever Nellore Mahanadu
Politics – The Telugu Desam Party has chosen Nellore district as the venue for its annual Mahanadu conclave for the first time, underlining the party’s growing confidence in a region that was once considered difficult terrain for the organisation. The decision comes after the party’s commanding performance in the 2024 Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections, where the TDP-led alliance secured all Assembly constituencies in the district.

The three-day political convention is scheduled to take place from May 27 to May 29 at the IFFCO SEZ premises in Racharlapadu village under the Kovur Assembly segment. Political analysts believe the move carries strong symbolic value, especially in a district that had long been associated with the Congress party and later the YSR Congress Party.
Shift in Political Landscape
For several decades, Nellore remained outside the TDP’s traditional sphere of influence. From the mid-1950s until the late 1980s, Congress maintained a dominant position in the district’s political structure, winning the majority of Assembly seats in successive elections. The district earlier had 11 constituencies before the number was reduced to 10 following constituency reorganisation in 2009.
The TDP managed to gain momentum in Nellore during the 1994 and 1999 elections, but its hold weakened in later years as political dynamics shifted again. The 2024 elections, however, marked a major turning point, with the TDP-led NDA alliance sweeping all ten Assembly constituencies and significantly weakening the YSRCP’s presence in the district.
Observers say the choice of Nellore for Mahanadu reflects the party’s broader effort to strengthen its organisational network in regions such as Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra, where it historically faced electoral challenges.
Strategic Importance of Kovur
The selection of Kovur constituency for hosting the conclave is also being linked to the efforts of local leaders, including Nellore MP Vemireddy Prabhakar Reddy and Kovur MLA Prashanthi Reddy. Party insiders indicate that both leaders actively pushed for organising the event in the constituency following the alliance’s strong electoral performance.
Prashanthi Reddy described the occasion as a proud moment for TDP workers in Nellore district. She said party cadres are preparing extensively to ensure the success of the event, adding that the leadership intends to make the conclave one of the most memorable political gatherings in the district’s history.
According to party leaders, elaborate arrangements are already underway at the venue to accommodate a massive turnout of delegates, supporters and party representatives from across the state.
First Major Event Under Lokesh’s Leadership Role
This year’s Mahanadu carries additional importance because it will be the first major organisational event after Nara Lokesh assumed responsibilities as the TDP’s national working president. Senior leaders are expected to discuss the party’s long-term political strategy, governance priorities and future expansion plans during the sessions.
The conclave is also likely to focus on strengthening the party structure at the grassroots level and preparing cadres for upcoming political challenges. Discussions on welfare implementation, administrative reforms and development policies are expected to form a key part of the agenda.
Large-Scale Preparations Underway
A coordination committee comprising several senior leaders has been overseeing preparations for the conclave. The panel includes Endowments Minister Anam Ramanarayana Reddy, Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister Ponguru Narayana, MP Vemireddy Prabhakar Reddy, TDP district president and MLC Beeda Ravichandra, along with local MLAs and party representatives.
Minister Ponguru Narayana said the arrangements are being carried out through collective planning and coordination among party leaders and workers. He stated that nearly five lakh delegates and supporters are expected to attend the three-day gathering, making it one of the largest political events in the state this year.
With the TDP attempting to reinforce its presence in regions that were once politically resistant, the Nellore Mahanadu is expected to serve not only as a party convention but also as a showcase of the party’s changing electoral reach and organisational confidence.
