Politics – A day after demonstrations broke out at Lady Shri Ram College regarding Principal Kanika Ahuja’s appearance in a political party’s social media video, tensions on campus continued to escalate as students raised fresh allegations against the college administration.

Allegations of Surveillance During Protests

Students participating in the protest claimed that administrative authorities attempted to monitor their activities. According to several accounts, individuals linked to the administration were seen using advanced smart glasses, reportedly Ray-Ban Meta AI devices, to record students gathered for demonstrations. Protesters expressed unease over what they described as intrusive observation, arguing that such actions created an atmosphere of discomfort and fear.

In addition to concerns over surveillance, some students alleged that their families had been contacted by the college administration. A second-year student, speaking on condition of anonymity, said her parents received a call urging them to persuade her to withdraw from the protest. The caller allegedly warned of possible disciplinary measures if participation continued.

Restrictions Reported Within Campus Premises

Participants in the protest also claimed that their movement within the campus was limited during the demonstrations. According to one student, access to certain areas appeared to be controlled, making it difficult for students to assemble freely. She further stated that the principal briefly addressed the gathering, assuring them that discussions would take place after a scheduled meeting.

However, students alleged that no further interaction followed, as the principal reportedly left the campus soon after. This, they said, contributed to frustration among protesters who were expecting an open dialogue.

Concerns Over Sudden CCTV Installation

Another major point of contention was the installation of CCTV cameras on campus shortly after the protests began. Students argued that the timing raised questions about intent, suggesting that the cameras were introduced primarily to monitor dissent rather than ensure safety.

Protesters highlighted that previous requests for CCTV cameras at college entrances had been denied. Those earlier requests, made in response to concerns about harassment outside campus gates, were reportedly turned down due to budget constraints. Students now questioned how funding suddenly became available during the protests.

Debate Over Academic Neutrality

In a statement, student representatives also challenged the principal’s explanation regarding her participation in the political video. The principal had reportedly described her involvement as part of an intellectual discussion. However, students argued that appearing in content associated with a political party while holding an institutional leadership role could blur the distinction between personal views and official responsibilities.

They emphasized that such actions may affect the perception of neutrality expected from educational leaders. According to the protesters, maintaining a clear boundary between academic responsibilities and political engagement is essential to preserve trust within the institution.

Questions Raised About Policy Discussion

Students further pointed out that the draft Bill referenced in the video had not been made publicly available at the time of the recording. They argued that without access to the full document, it would have been difficult to engage in a meaningful academic critique or discussion.

This, they said, undermined the claim that the video represented a purely intellectual exchange. Protesters maintained that academic discourse requires transparency and access to complete information, especially when it involves public policy.

As the situation continues to unfold, students have called for a transparent and open dialogue with the administration. They have emphasized the need for clarity on issues related to surveillance, campus restrictions, and the role of institutional leaders in political spaces.

While no official response addressing all allegations has been publicly detailed so far, the developments have sparked wider discussions about student rights, administrative accountability, and the balance between personal expression and professional responsibility within academic institutions.
