Politics – Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann arrived in New Delhi on Tuesday to meet Droupadi Murmu, aiming to raise concerns over the recent departure of several Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha members who have joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Mann expressed confidence ahead of the meeting, stating that the President, as the constitutional head of the nation, would carefully consider their concerns.
Chief Minister Raises Constitutional Concerns
According to officials, Mann plans to highlight what he described as a troubling political development involving the shift of seven AAP members of Parliament to the BJP. He emphasized that such moves raise questions about public trust and democratic accountability. Speaking to reporters before departing for Rashtrapati Bhavan, Mann referred to the President as the protector of the Constitution and said he expects a fair hearing.
The delegation accompanying him includes several AAP legislators from Punjab, though the formal invitation was extended only to the Chief Minister. The group traveled together to the national capital to present their position on the issue.
Demand for Revocation of MPs’ Recognition
Punjab Minister Aman Arora stated that the state government would formally urge the President to reconsider the recognition of those MPs who switched parties. He argued that voters in Punjab had placed their faith in these representatives, and their departure undermines that trust.
Arora further suggested that the political landscape in Punjab remains resistant to BJP influence, asserting that the electorate is unlikely to support the party in the state. His remarks reflected broader concerns within the AAP leadership about maintaining voter confidence.
AAP Leaders Call Move a Threat to Democracy
Another senior minister, Harpal Singh Cheema, described the situation as a challenge to democratic values. He said that all AAP MLAs from Punjab intended to collectively present their case before the President. Cheema also raised the idea of invoking mechanisms such as recall, arguing that elected representatives should remain accountable to the electorate that chose them.
He maintained that Punjab would play a significant role in resisting what he termed attempts to weaken democratic institutions, adding that the state’s leadership is committed to safeguarding constitutional principles.
Party Dismisses Speculation About Internal Defections
AAP legislator Vijay Singla dismissed speculation that other party members might follow a similar path and switch allegiances. He described such claims as baseless and reiterated that the current protest is focused solely on addressing the actions of those who have already left.
Singla added that expressing dissent against these developments is a legitimate democratic right. He confirmed that the delegation, under Mann’s leadership, intends to present a unified stance during the meeting with the President.

The controversy follows the departure of several prominent AAP figures, including Raghav Chadha, Sandeep Pathak, and Ashok Mittal, who recently joined the BJP. Other members such as Harbhajan Singh, Rajinder Gupta, Vikramjit Singh Sahney, and Swati Maliwal have also made similar moves.
