During a hearing before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin outlined the administration’s plan to introduce AI-powered tools and digital services designed to speed up legal immigration while maintaining strong security standards.
AI Platform to Begin Operations Soon
According to Mullin, the Department of Homeland Security has already started developing automated systems capable of handling several stages of immigration processing. He informed lawmakers that the first AI-based platform is expected to become operational within the next 30 days. The initial phase will focus on reducing the pending applications under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which has faced significant processing delays over the years.
Digital Forms Expected to Reduce Errors
Officials also plan to redesign the application process so that incomplete or incorrectly filled forms cannot be submitted. Mullin explained that many visa delays occur because applicants make avoidable mistakes in paperwork. By introducing intelligent digital forms with built-in validation, the department expects to reduce processing time and improve accuracy across immigration applications.
Mobile Application Under Development
The Department of Homeland Security is working alongside the Department of Commerce to create a mobile application that will allow applicants to access immigration-related services more conveniently. Mullin revealed that he recently presented the proposal to President Donald Trump, who expressed strong support for the initiative. The planned application is expected to simplify communication with immigration authorities while making the overall process more accessible for applicants and employers alike.
Faster Processing for Agricultural Worker Visas
Responding to questions from Representative Dan Newhouse, Mullin highlighted improvements already achieved in processing H-2A agricultural worker visas. He stated that applications under this category are now typically completed within 15 days. Since many seasonal agricultural workers return to the United States regularly, existing records help authorities complete security checks more efficiently. The department is also reviewing possible solutions for labor shortages in industries such as dairy farming, where current visa rules differ from seasonal agricultural employment.
Security Screening Will Continue Alongside Automation
While emphasizing faster services, Mullin made it clear that security will remain a central priority. He confirmed that immigration cases approved during the previous administration are being reviewed again in certain situations as part of additional screening efforts. According to the department, advanced technology is intended to improve efficiency without reducing the level of background verification required under US immigration laws.
