Politics – Opposition Leaders Convene After Women’s Reservation Bill Fails in Lok Sabha

Politics –  Senior leaders from Opposition parties are set to gather on Saturday morning at the Parliament complex to assess the political situation following the failure of a key constitutional amendment bill in the Lok Sabha. The meeting will take place in the chamber of the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, and is expected to focus on the next course of action.

Key Opposition Meeting Amid Political Tensions

The meeting comes at a crucial time, a day after the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, could not pass in the Lok Sabha. The proposed legislation sought to reserve one-third of seats in Parliament for women, but it fell short of the required two-thirds majority despite extensive debate.

Rahul Gandhi, who serves as the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, will not be present at the meeting. He is currently travelling to Tamil Nadu as part of his party’s election campaign efforts.

Bill Falls Short Despite Majority Support

The women’s reservation proposal received 278 votes in favour and 211 against. Although it secured a simple majority, it did not meet the constitutional requirement needed for such amendments. The bill also included provisions to increase the total number of seats in the Lok Sabha, linking representation changes to future delimitation based on the 2011 Census.

This combination of provisions became a point of contention, with Opposition parties raising concerns over the implications of delimitation and seat expansion.

Diverging Views Between NDA and Opposition

The outcome has intensified political differences between the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the Opposition INDIA bloc. Leaders from the NDA have accused the Opposition of preventing a significant reform aimed at enhancing women’s participation in lawmaking.

On the other hand, Opposition parties have maintained that they support women’s reservation in principle but object to its linkage with delimitation and changes in parliamentary strength. They argue that such provisions could alter regional representation in ways that require broader consensus.

NDA Plans Nationwide Outreach Campaign

Following the bill’s defeat, leaders from the NDA held their own strategy meeting in Parliament on Friday. According to sources, it was decided that alliance members would actively communicate their position to the public.

The NDA is preparing to launch a countrywide campaign, including demonstrations, press briefings, and social media outreach. The aim is to highlight what they describe as the Opposition’s reluctance to support measures for women’s empowerment.

BJP Mahila Morcha to Lead Protests

As part of the outreach effort, protests are scheduled to take place at district headquarters across India. These demonstrations will be spearheaded by the Bharatiya Janata Party’s women’s wing, the Mahila Morcha.

Party leaders have indicated that the issue will also feature prominently in upcoming electoral campaigns, particularly in states such as West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, where elections are approaching.

Political Implications Ahead of Elections

The developments surrounding the bill are likely to influence political narratives in the coming weeks. Both sides are expected to use the issue to strengthen their positions among voters, especially women.

While the ruling alliance is focusing on projecting itself as supportive of increased representation, the Opposition is likely to continue emphasising procedural and structural concerns tied to the proposed legislation.
